Reduction of Vast Quantities
Of Supplies Seen Remedy
For Boosting Of Prices,
Chicago, Oct. 2. (AP) Fed-
' cral holdings of agricultural pro
ducts, which some economists
say should be reduced to com
bat an inflationary rise In prices,
are either at or close to record
, levels, according to market ita-
tistics today.
i The government owns vast
i quantities of wheat and corn and
1 smaller supplies of rye and bar-
' ley. These were acquired under
a plan to remove surplus grain
(from consumption in an effort
to maintain prices.
In the dairy field, the govern-

i ment possesses butter, shell eggs,
i frozen eggs and cheese. Except-
i ing butter, however, these are In
'governmental hands only tem
porarilythey will be shipped
i abroad under the lend-lease act,
I Federal agencies also hold va
rious canned fruits and vege
tables. Purchases In this group
are distributed primarily for re
lief purposes, although some are
being lend-leased.
Seen Inflation Brake
Suggestions that the govern
ment release a part of these hold
ings were made earlier this week
by the Brookings Institution, an
economic research organization
with headquarters In Washing
ton.
. "The most significant single
step that might be taken In ar
resting the general rise of
prices," the institution said,
"would be to reduce somewhat
the prices of agricultural pro
ducts. This could readily be
done by releasing to the market
portion of the crops now
stored in government ware
houses." The government on August 31
had 173,639,000 bushels of
wheat most of it 1940 grain,
with some from 1939. This was
the most wheat the government
had ever owned.

the country fair board Indicat
ing the growing importance of
the poultry business, L. E. Fran
ci, 4-H club agent, told the
Lion club at It weekly dinner
meeting in the Hotel Medford
last night.
Mr. Francis outlined the
broadened phase of 4-H club
work under Its new status and
mentioned capon raising as a
new and profitable activity. He
said that other Important classes
of the 4-H club poultry division
are turkeys, ducks, geese, pul
let and rabbits. He appealed to
the Lion to sponsor 4-H poultry
activities in this county. The
Lion pledged full support and
will participate In plans for the
coming poultry show scheduled
for October 31 and November 1.
Glen Smith, new superinten
dent of poultry shows for 4-H
club, said that about SO boys
are now enrolled In 4-H club
poultry work, this enrollment
indicating about 200 entries In
the poultry ihow. The poultry
work, he added, would be great
ly expanded under Lion club
sponsorship.

phrey, president, presided.
