wondered vaguely just huw
much difference this development
would make with Pam ana him
self. Not that he doubted Pam.
Money would make no difference
to her. It (he cared for him with
money, she would cart for him
without it
But he was concerned about hlj
own share of the thing. He would
have nothing to offer her now. He
had wasted his years pretty gen
erally. He had made no start in
business at all, due to the fact
that he had always supposed his
father's money would be enough
to keep him.
And there were other things.
His thought lingered darkly on
that May Frisbee. May had been
one of the gay companions of his
lighter and more careless hours.
And May had refused to forget.
With his allowance cut off he
would be unable to appease May
with expensive gifts. He won
dered vaguely Just what her re
actions would be. Probably not
pleasant
May, whom he had met at a
Greenwich Village cocktail party,
had fastened to him with eager
good nature after their first meet
ing. Jerry wasn't in love with
anyone, so he hadn't minded. May
was quite lovely to look at She
was a dancer, she explained, soon
to be "at liberty," because the
siiow was closing. And she had
remained "at liberty" after she
found that Jerry was the son of
the very ricti wintnropes. jerry
hadn't minded. She had been
an amusing and agreeable com
panion. That would have to stop

Jerry grined a little as he thought

share of the Winthrope fortune,
with Lenore thrown in for good
measure. It was going to be pretty
tough for him, with the engage
ment announced.
Jerry was having a leisurely
breakfast on the veranda of the
Casa when Lenore appeared. Her
eyes were surly as they met nis.
"A nice show you're making
of yourself," she said as she
dropped into a chair opposite him.
"If I can match you, I'm good,"
was Jerry's reply.
"You're going to ruin every
thing for me, getting serious with
that basket girL what do you
suppose Gervase will aay when
he sees what you want to bring

have Gervase. You're engaged to
him. We'll manage a wedding for

get happiness out of life. You're

a cottage never appealed to me."
Jerry, iianaing in the hallway,
turned away. He didn't want to
hear more. He was sorry fo r
Adele, offering to give everything
to Lenore. That's the way she'd
be of course. And he was sorry
for his father. lie and Lenore
were pretty useless to their
parents in this crisis, and that
wasn't the way things should be.
But it was too late to do anything
much about it As he walked
away, he heard his father enter

"Oh, no, you won't, Adele. You
won't sell a jewel or give so much
as a chip diamond to a daughter
who talks to you as Lenore has
been talking."
He turned to his daughter. 1

needn't tell you how surprised I

Lenore looked at her lather
for a moment then turned and
fled.

store. The Buckhorn was startsd by Albert Friedrich in 1881. As a hobby he collected heads
of horned animals, and now the collection has representatives of almost every type of horned
animal known!
