had recovered sufficiently to
resume his work tomorrow.
Floyd Fisher, charged with as
sault with intent to kill, was
sentenced to 20 years in the
state prison for the shooting.
Wilson was shot when he went
to the Fisher home to investi
gate a complaint by Fisher's
wife that her husband had beat
en her.

NEUTRALITY LAW
Will Support Roosevelt In
Any Effort For Repeal Or
Modification, Is Word.
Washington, Sept. 30.-
Wendell L. Willkie made It
known today he would support
President Roosevelt in any ef
fort to repeal cr modify the
neutrality act.
At the same time, reports
reached Capitol hill that Secre
tary Hull would urge the chief
executive to recommend virtual
scrapping of the present law.
Returning this morning from
a weekend sojourn at his Hyde
Park estate, Mr. Roosevelt was
expected to confer with Hull
seme time today and to talk
with legislative leaders tomor
row before starting work on the
special neutrality act message
which congress looks for later
this week.
Conferences To Guide
White House officials Indi
cated that these two confer
ences probably would determine
whether the president would
seek a limited modification of
the law or its outright repeal.
There have been reports that
the president would confine
himself to a request for author
ity to arm American merchant
ships. On the other hand, some
informants have said he would
tell congress he also should have
the power to send American
commercial vessels into belliger
ent ports and combat areas now
forbidden by the neutrality law.
If both requests were granted
only a skeleton of the law would
remain.

Italians had to bomb London
last year when they thought we
were going to collapse, and we

to the best of our ability and at

of the war should render such
action convenient and helpful."

To Cut Output To 43.2

The government ordered makers
of household mechanical refrig
erators today to cut production
for the last five months of 1941
to a level 43 2 per cent under
average monthly output for the
year which ended June 30, and
warned that cuts in 1942 will
probably be greater.."
Thirty factories employing 43,
000 workers will feel the curtail
ment Imposed by Priorities Di

meant of conserving steel and
other strategic material! for de
fense, needs.
It was the second drastic cut
Imposed on an industry produc
ing durable consumer's goods.
Automobile production for De
cember recently was cut 48.4 per
cent, and similar limitations are
expected soon for washing ma
chines, household ironers, vac
uum cleaners and other items.
Henderson's With
The refrigerator order was
based on recommendations of
Leon Henderson, director of civ
ilian supply, whose program
called for production of only
2,007,000 refrigerators In the 12
months beginning Aug. 1. 1941,
as compared with 3,670,000
units in the 12 months ended
June 30, 1941.
This curtailment was expected
to release 173.000 tons of steel
in the twelve month for produc
tion of warships, cargo vessels,
tanks and other defense items,
as well as considerable quanti
ties of aluminum, brass, chrom
ium, copper, nickel, tin, zinc,
mica and rubber.
Monthly quotas for the refrig
erator industry will total 175,519
units for each of the five months
August to December, 1941, in
clusive, as compared with aver
age monthly output of 309,234
units in the 12 months ended last
June 30.
Because of seasonal produc
tion variations, the curtailed out
put will be only 2 per cent under
production for the last five
months of 1940, although consid
erably under the level of recent
months. However, production in
the first seven months of 1942 is
to be leveled off to a large ex
tent. Instead of following the
normal summer upswing.

Langlie, local authorities indi
cated unanimously, the govern

close all houses of prostitution
in their respective cities as a
matter of cooperation with fed
eral, state and United States
army authorities.
The move, the governor's of
fice said, is "not taken as a moral
crusade, but as a health meas
ure." The meeting was called by the
governor, at the suggestion of
federal security and army of
ficials, one of whom said the
Pacific northwest is "one of the ;
three worst places in the coun
try, from a vice standpoint." I

Car On Elgin Street
La Grande, Sept. 30. P)
R. L. Shoemaker, cashier of the
First National Bank of Elgin,
committed suicide yesterday,
Coroner L. L. Snodgrass said
today.
Shoemaker, about 80, had
been in ill health. Snodgrass
said he shot himself while seat
ed in his car on an Elgin street.
His widow and a son. Vernal,
a teacher in the La Grande high
school, survive.

guilty and sentenced to 30 days
in the county Jail. Tha men,

complaining witness. He claimed
