Small Autos, Motorcycles
And Bicycles Will Be Car
ried By New Battalion.
Washington. Sept. 19
Plans lor organization of the
army's first air-borne infantry
battalion, which will be equip
ped with small automobiles,
motorcycles, and bicycles, wero
announced today by the war de
partment following months of
experimental work.
The new battalion will be or
eanized at Fort Benning, Ga.,
rOctober 10 with an Initial
strength of 500 volunteers, in
cluding SO from Fort Bragg, N.
C, and 450 from Camps Croft,
S. C, and Wheeler, Ga.
Disclosure of the plans came
at a press conference held by
Secretary of War Stimson at
which it also was announced
that hereafter officers of na
tional guard units may be as
signed to non-national guard
outfits whenever it is desirable.
Far Reaching Step
This step was regarded as one
of the most far reaching yet
taken toward merging national
guard organizations complete
into the broader structure of
the army. It means that regu
lar and reserve officers will be
assigned to command guard
troops as well as that guard of
ficers may command other
troops. In connection with this
r change the department said
that guard officers no longer
would be promoted without re
gard to the length of service
prior to promotion.
Another announced change
affecting- the guard was that
guard enlisted men returned
home in keeping with the
army's intention of releasing as
many men as possible in the
next few months would be car
ried on the rosters of their
state detachments so that they
would not become subject to
the draft even though of draft
age.

Survives 350-Foot Fall
Miami, Okla. (UP) A broken
ankle and body bruises were all
the injuries nine-year-old Bobby
Turley of Miami, Okla., suffered
when he tumbled 350 feet to the
bottom of a mine shaft. The boy
landed in a pool of water and
climbed out on a timber. His
cries brought rescuers to his aid
two hours later.

Hongkong (P The Chinese
Friends of the Wounded society,
which boasts 3.000.000 members
in China, the United States and
elsewhere, is scanning the ranks
of young educated Chinese in
Hongkong for recruits to its
large army of men and women
serving in field hospitals and
hygienic stations near China's
multiple battle lines.
There are more than 25,000
hospital workers attached to the
national headquarters in Chung
king. Smaller staffs are main
tained by 80 branch societies
throughout free China.
The Salvation Army, the New
Life Movement association and
the Chinese Red Cross help the
society's work, which ranges
from nursing and dietetics to
delousing, laundering and sew
ing buttons on a soldier's tough
tunic.

tee raising $110,000 to pay for
the site of the $14,000,000 air '
corps supply and repair depot
which will be built near Gelger

At a luncheon drive leaders
reported $92,523 had been
raised. The drive started Mon
day and is expected to end Sat.

A recent communication from
the state sanitary engineer
points out that those engaged
ir cleaning septic tanks must
dispose of the sludge in a sani
tary manner, County Sanitarian
George Heryford said today.
According to the state official,
the sludge should be covered
with at least two feet of earth
as a serious nuisance has been
caused in some areas of the
state by improper disposal of
the sludge.
