Attack From T-Formation
And Notre Dame Shift.
Medford high's 1941 edition
of the Black Tornado, drilled to
"T" In the T-formation and
with nine lcttcrmen of last
season in its starting lineup, will
be unveiled at the stadium to
night In opposition to the Weed,
Cal.. high school Cougars. The
opening kickoff is slated for 8
o'clock sharp.
The Medford eleven, averag
ing 171 pounds per player, with
the line tipping the scales at
175 pounds and the backfield at
165 per unit, will take the field
with exactly 16 days of stiff
practice sessions behind it, nine
of which were spent at Lake o'
Woods.
Coach Bill Bowerman said
the Tigers would employ plenty
of the T-formation along witli
the tried-and-true Notre Dame
shift.
The starting lineup, Bower
man said, would include Bill
Wall, 182, and Curt Hopkins,
165, at ends; Bud Mayfield, 195
and Ray Casebcer, 174, at tack
les; Roger Barker, 165 and Bob
Mitchell, 170, at guards; Dan
Winter, 165, at center; Bob
Stead, 160, at quarterback; Cato
Wray, 140, at left halfback; Ike
Orr, 165, at right halfback and
Jimmy Glenn, 105, at fullback.
Three Shifts
Wall, who has been shifted
from tackle to end, will be the
lone returning line regular from
last season. However, the other
forwards are lettermen with the
exception of Mayfield, a trans
fer from Woodland, Cal., and
Casebeer, up from Junior high.
Hopkins, the other end, was a
regular back last season. An
other shift has seen Glenn move
out of the line to the fullback
position.
While little1 is known regard
ing the strength of the Cougars,
they will come here with three
three-year lettermen In their
lineup Argyris, lightrring-fast
right halfback; Aquila, fullback
nd Kegg, left end.
Jean Eberhart will referee,
Ed Eilertsen will umpire and
George Robertson will act as
bead linesman.

If the Brooklyn Dodgers don't
win the National league base
ball championship maybe they
will go after Joe Louis' heavy
weight boxing crown.
They took their minds off
baseball long enough yesterday
to lose a critical game to the
Pittsburgh Pirates, 6-5, and they
also lost their preliminary ven
ture into the heavyweight class
to Umpire George Magerkurth,
a man mountain weighing about
225 pounds and 6 feet, 4 inches
tall.
But the fates which protect
little children, and the Dodgers,
saw them through their hours
of travail once again by bring
ing the Boston Braves a 4-1 vic
tory over the St. Louis Card
inals. This kept Brooklyn in
front by one game with the

Unless Seattle completely
loses its winning ways, Sacra

for their third successive Coast
league baseball championship.
Mathematically, the Solons
still have a slim chance to over
haul Seattle, but that possibility
was dampened last night when
the Rainiers won their 100th
game of the season. The victory
failed to Increase Seattle's three
game margin over Sacramento,
but reduced to two the number
of games the Rainiers must win
to clinch the pennant.
Possibility of a Rainier losing
streak looked slim last night as
they trimmed Los Angeles, 5
to 3.
Sacramento stayed in the race
by edging Oakland, 2 to 0.
After losing four games in a
row, San Diego unwrapped two
fine pitching performances to
beat Hollywood in both ends
of a doubleheader, 3-2 and 4-0.

When the skater has mastered
these primary movements he is
then ready to take up figure
skating. One writer gave this
definition of figure skating,
"artist plus athlete equals fig
ure skater. The figure skaters
practice is made up of many
school figures starting with the
figure eight. Every turn and
movement the skater uses is
taken up In the school figures.
To show the Importance of
having them perfected, Olympic
champions train for six and
eight hours each day, tracing
and retracing their school fig
ures. When the skater has mas
tered the figure eight on all
edges he is ready to learn danc
ing on ice. Ice dancing requires
very little more energy than
ballroom dancing. The standard
ice dances are, the waltz, fox
trot, the tango, and the fourteen
step, besides countless varia
tions. One need not be an expert
to enjoy dancing on ice. It Is
a thrill to say the least.

Jamboree at the Medford senior
high school stadium Friday
night, October 3, Alble Beck,
Jacksonville school superintend
ent, announced today.
The teams have been divided
into two groups, and each half
dozen will play two short quar
ters. In the West group are
flogue River, Central Point.
Gold Hill and Eagle Point.
Teams of the East group will
be Phoenix, Jacksonville, Talent
and Prospect.
AL HOSTAK SIGNS FOR
THREE BOUTS IN EAST
Seattle, Sept. 18. (JP) Al
Hostak, former NBA middle
weight boxing champion, will
leave Monday for New York
City where Promoter Mike
Jacobs has signed him for three
bouts.
Hostak will be accompanied
by his manager, Eddie Marino,
and the pair will be assisted
in New York by Pete Reilly.
Al's opponents have not been selected.
