Foot Addition North Side
Of Headquarters Building
When men of the Medford fire
department go to work on their
Christmai toy project this year,
they will have a new workshop
in which to rebuild and repaint
the old, discarded playthings
into shiny new gifts for under
privileged children.
The new workshop Is now
finder construction. It will form
part of department headquarters
on the north side next to the
tower. With a concrete floor
and wooden walls, the shop will
be 30 feet long, 2G feet wide and
one story high. It will afford
more room than the men now
have to work In and will be
more convenient for both the
firemen and the public. The
shop Is being built by the fire
men themselves.
Shop Well Equipped
The workshop now Is on the
second floor adjoining the kitch
en. Folding doors, which can
be opened for the full width
of the kitchen, separate the two
rooms. The present workshop
Is to be made into a reception
room.
With a nucleus of tools bought
by the firemen themselves years
ago, the workshop has been built
up gradually through funds pro
cured from the firemen s annual
ball. Now the workshop Is well
equipped with all sorts of tools
nsed by the firemen In their
Christmas toy project. Included
are the following power-driven
tools: drill press, lathe, sander,
Joiner, table saw, band saw and
emery wheel.

I OF SLAYING MOTHER
Goldendale, Wash., Sept. 19.
VP) Eric Miller, 22-year-old
farm youth, was convicted of
first degree murder last night
by a superior court Jury for the
killing last May of his mother,
Mrs. Annetta Miller. The Jury
recommended against the death
penalty, making a life sentence
mandatory.

ducted by the quartermaster
corps for a concentrated ration
especially designed as emer
gency food for parachutists, av
iators and fast-moving mechan
ized troops.
The new "vest pocket" ration
being tested has 3,311 calories
packed inside three heat-resisting
fiber cartons (one for each
meal). The three meals for one
man have a total weight of
27.1 ounces or slightly less than
two pounds. The experimental
work is being conducted by the
quartermaster subsistence labor
atory In Chicago. First field
tests were made with soldiers
at Fort Snelling, Minn., In Au
gust. Vitamins and minerals In the
experimental ration are more
highly condensed than in the
canned field ration developed
by the quartermaster corps,
which have been proving suc
cessful on army field man
euvers. A vltamtzed "pep" tab
let, a fruit cake made of de
hydrated apricots, peaches,
prunes and raisins, and a
cracker containing special foods
that apparently will withstand
every extreme In temperature
without spoiling are Included In
three fiber containers, all of
which may be slipped into one
pocket of a soldier's uniform.
"Army and Navy Register
describes the "vest pocket" ra
tion in its present experimental
stage as follows:
"The breakfast In box has
a total net weight or nine
ounces and contains 983 cal
ories. This meal includes four
ounces of the new Pemmlcan
biscuit (containing special vita
mins), 840 calories; a 'pep' tab
let made of malted milk and
dextrose weighing two ounces,
219 calories; a 3-ounce veal loaf
with 228 calories; two soluble
coffee tablets and one slice of
chewing gum.
"The packaged dinner (to be
served at noon) has a total net
weight of eight ounces and con
tains 1,012 calories. This .meal
includes four ounces of Pemml
can biscuit containing S40 cal
ories; a 'pep' tablet made of
100 percent dextrose, weighing
IV ounces and containing 142
calories; a 3-ounce ham spread
with 330 calories; a tube of
bouillon and one slice of chew
ing gum.
'The supper carton has a to
tal net weight of 9.6 ounces
and contains 1,316 calories. This
meal Includes four ounces of
Pemmlcan biscuit containing
540 calories; a piece of choco
late bar or standard 'D' ration
weighing four ounces and con
taining 240 calories; cervelut
(condensed meat) weighing four
ounces and containing 836 cal
ories; one package of orange
powder, which the parachutist
simply put Into a container of
cold water to make a refreshing
beverage, and a slice of gum.
"The 'pep' tablets are white
in color and contain special vita
mins sprayed with citric acid
The taste is much like lemon
candy although not quite so
sweet. When the parachutist
swallows a tablet he Immediate
ly has a heavy flow of saliva
so that the food value of the
tablet Is quickly absorbed into
the blood stream.
"This means more energy for
the soldier for, as the food
physiologists term it, 'anything
that goes quickly Into the blood
stream In the form of glucose
goes Immediately through the
liver and is converted at once
Into glycogen and becomes the
basis for energy'."
