New Discovery By Armour
Foundation Means Mil
lions For Spud Industry.

Armour Research Foundation at
the Illinois Institute of Tech
nology announced today its
scientists had perfected a dry
ing process to prevent bacterial
soft rot in potatoes which it
said would save millions of dol
lars annually for the potato
growing Industry.
The announcement followed
14-month investigation which
showed that the outside skin.
through heat treatment, under
went an Increase in the num
ber of cells that formed a bar
rier preventing entrance ot soft
rot bacteria. At the same time
the drying process Itself killed
certain number of bacteria
but did not actually sterilize the
potato.
Dr. Richard Belkengren, bio
chemist and plant hlstologlst of
the foundation, with others at
the institute, made the investi
gation. Florldians Pioneers
The process Itself was devel
oped from a primary pattern
used by a group of Florida
growers who employed type
of dryer which basically was a
conveyor belt running through
a hot-air blast. When they ob
served the results, the an
nouncement said, they noted
that the rot had almost totally
disappeared. Subsequently five
growers, all of Goulds, Fla., re
quested the research foundation
to undertake the investigation
to determine the precise nature
of the treatment on which they
had stumbled.
The foundation's experimental
dryer is 20 feet long. Two 10-
foot parallel wooden chambers
