The annual autumn madness,
otherwise known as the football
icason, will officially arrive In
southern Oregon this week-end
All four Southern Oregon con
ference elevens will go to tho
port against competition of
varying degrees of potency, and
after the firing Is completed
fans will have some knowledge
of how their favorite clubs fig
ure to perform during the re
mainder of the campaign.
For Medford, Ashland and
Grants Pass, games this week
end will mark their first of the
1941 season. For the fourth
member of the loop, Klamath
Falls, it will be the second start
of the current schedule. Klam
ath opened with a IB to 13 con
quest of Chlco, Cal., last Friday
night
Medford's Black Tornado, de
fending conference champs, will
entertain the Weed, Cal., high
school Cougars, and while little
or nothing Is known regarding
the Californians, the locals are
expected to open their season
with victory. It may be a
tough battle and again it may
not, but the Bowerman squad
figures to cop against a team
hailing from a school consider
ably smaller than the South
Oakdale avenue Institution.
Ashland high's Grizzlies will
make their debut against the
Lakeview Honkers Friday night
on fine new turf gridiron on
Walter Phillips field in Ashland,
and under a new coach, Frank
O'Neal, former Pacific univer
sity athlete.
The Grizzlies will open tho
season with a veteran team
averaging 137 pounds per man,
the line scaling 160 and the
backfleld 192. Every position
but right guard will be filled
by a letterman. Lawrence Hall
will be the lone non-stripe win
ner In the Grizzly starting line
up. Incidentally, Russell Hawk,
190-pound 1940 Ashland cen
ter who attended Medford's
Lake o' Woods training camp
and had planned to transfer
here, has returned to the
Grlssly lair and apparently
has given up his idea of com
ing to Medford. Hawk, be
cause he missed most of the
Ashland practice sessions, ts
listed on the second team, but
is expected to break into the
starting lineup before long.

Deer Reported
a new coach, Justin Weakley,
will travel to North Bend for
a Saturday afternoon contest.
Last season the Cavemen, with
lone of their finest elevens in
history (only defeat was at the
hands of Medford, 20 to 6),
blanked North Bend by an 18
to 0 count, but may find the
going tougher this year,

graduated, and Weakley has
nothing but a green squad to
work with. However, he claims
his lads have "loads of fight,
and that's going to help a lot."
Klamath Falls apparently has
the toughest week-end game,
clashing with Portland's Grant
high at Klamath Falls Friday
night. Grant was last year's
metropolitan champ, and while
not believed to be so strong as
in 1940 the Pelicans will un
doubtedly have their bills full
with the big city club.
All Southern Oregon confer
ence teams will play on turf
for the first time in history this
season. Following in the foot
steps of Medford and Klamath
Falls, who pioneered the grass
gridirons, Ashland and Grants
Pass put in grass last spring
and their velvety fields are
ready for the pounding of cleats

Most traveling squads will be
larger this year, he said, since
the unlimited substitution rule
makes it feasible to carry spec
ialists who will be able to call
the play they are sent in to

As hunters oiled their rifles
and checked over camping
equipment for the opening of
the 1941 deer season Saturday,
reports from the state police
and the Rogue River National
Forest headquarters indicated
that the game would be more
plentiful than last year, and
possibly more so than in many
previous years. The season will
close October 25, inclusive, the
same as in 1940.
Rogue River National Forest
headquarters cited three reasons
why there will probably be
more deer roaming the moun
tains in southern Oregon this
season than last. Namely, be
cause of the mild winter in
194U-41, thus allowing more
deer to survive; the large num
ber of deer seen by forest visi
tors and Rogue River National
Forest employes during the sum
mer, and because of the fact
that more persons have been
employed during the past year,
which would presumably cause
a decrease in the number of deer
killed out of season for food.
Attach Coupons
The bag limit this year will
be the same as last, one black
tail or one mule deer having
not less than forked horns. Both
deer coupons from the general
hunting license must be attach
ed to deer of either species when
killed, according to the Oregon
state game commission.
A special gun regulation this
year makes it unlawful to use
shotguns loaded with buckshot
or bird shot to hunt or kill any
big game.
A limited doe season will be
held this year in the Fremont
area in Klamath and Lake
counties, and in portions of
Grant. Cook and Wheeler coun
ties. The commission reports
that 3,800 tags for does have
been sold, and emphasized that
all hunters possessing doc tags
must register at checking sta
tions before entering the hunt
ing area, and must again regis
ter upon leaving the area, re
gardless of whether a kill was
made.
Antelope Season
Antelope hunting will be per
mitted in two areas. In the first,
the season will open, Sept. 22
and close Oct. S in that part of
Malheur county south of the
Burns-Ontario highway. The
other will open in portions of
Lake and Harney counties Sept.
28 and will continue through
Oct. 5. The 3000 special ante
lope tags authorized is nearly
exhausted, the game commission
reported.
NIXON IS APPOINTED
MINES COORDINATOR
Salem, Sept. 18. A') Ap
pointment of Earl K. Nixon,
state director of geology and
mineral industries, as emergency
coordinator of mines for Oregon
was announced today by Gover
nor Charles A. Sprague. who
made the appointment at the re
quest of the federal office of
production management.
Nixon will help mine opera
tors in obtaining emergency re
pair equipment so that they may
continue production.

The favorite flippancy of
baseball players is "I'd rather
be lucky than good" and this
little crumb of wisdom explains
why the Brooklyn Dodgers still
are in first place in the National
league and seem destined to win
the pennant.
They are fate's fair-haired
boys even though their lead has
shrunk like a dollar shirt in the
last couple of days.
Their daily adventures read
like chapters out of a story book
and yesterday they outdid that
fictional piker, Merriwell, again.
Brooklyn was on the verge of
dropping its second straight
game, trailing 3-1 going into the
ninth inning at Pittsburgh. A
loss coupled with a double vic
tory by St.' Louis over the Bos
ton Braves would have transfer
red first place to the Cardinals
by a tiny percentage margin.
But what happened? You
guessed it, the Dodgers scored
five runs in the ninth inning and
beat the Pirates 6-4 to retain
a one-game margin over the
Cards, who whipped the Braves
6-1 and 3-2.
The Cincinnati Reds bagged a
doubleheader from the Phils 1-0
and 3-2.
The Chicago Cubs climbed on
the New York Giants 7-3.
In the American league the
New York Yankees clipped the
Chicago White Sox 5-3. The Bos
ton Red Sox edged out Cleve
land 3-2. Detroit downed the
Philadelphia Athletics 3-2, and
Washington whipped the St.
Louis Browns 9-8 in 10 innings.

Pacific Coast league belongs to
Yank Terry, San Diego right
hander. Terrv. 28-vear-old newcomer
to the lolp, had 25 wins against
eight losses through Tuesday.
That give him an average of
758. Hal Turpin of Seattle, with
a record of 18-6 and an average
of .750, might beat him out in
the percentage department but
he can't approach that 25-win
record.
Dick Barrett of Seattle, cur
rently boasting a 19-12 record,
won the coast hurling crown
last year. An early season In
jury hampered his chances of
repeating.

Columbia river packers, still
working themselves out from
under one of the biggest catches
of silverside salmon in history,
took time today to praise volun
teer workers who helped save
the catch.
They admitted that normal
crews never could have packed
the landings. Tons of fish would
have spoiled had not office
workers, mill hands, bus drivers
folks from all walks of life
come to the rescue. When their
regular day's work ended, they
hustled to the canneries and
worked the night shifts. They
enabled the packing plants to
work at peak speed 24 hours a
day. Packers said many women
who never saw the inside of a
cannery before, worked on the
belt lines.

Seattle had its third straight
Coast league championship vir
tually within grasp today, after
hustling into first place late in
the season with an astonishing
rally.
With six games yet to play,
the Rainiers hold a three-game
lead over second-place Sacra
mento. By winning three more
games, they can clinch the pen
nant even if Sacramento snouia
capture all five contest remain-
in. on its schedule.
Seattle took over the lead two
weeks ago, overhauling 16
game advantage the Solons held
at mid-season. The Rainiers in
creased their margin a full game
last night by defeating Los An
geles, while Oakland thumped
Sacramento and reduced the
Solons' pennant chances to the
mathematical category.
The Rainiers edged Los An
geles 1 to 0 in the opening game
of a double-header, and played
to a scoreless tie in the night
cap, which ended in the eighth
inning because of the Coast
league curfew.
Oakland blasted a tie in the
ninth inning and nipped Sacra
mento. 6 to 5. Mel Duezabou
singled, stole second, and scored
the winning run on Bill Rigney s
single to center.
Hollywood set San Diego
down for the third consecutive
time, 5 to 1.
Portland collected six runs on
errors, and defeated San Fran
cisco 6 to 4. The Beavers got
three runs in the sixth when
