Brooklyn In Hot
Pennant Battle
T Vi Rra-h and Brazen
"Bumi" ol Brooklyn don't but
ton onto this 1941 National loop
baseball bunting, it certainly
won't be because they didn't re
ceive a whopping schedule break
... the Durocher Dodgers, after
they finish with the western
clubs, return to the east to face
the Futile Phillies and the al-most-as-anemic
Braves in their
final nine contests of the cam
paign ... the Cardinals, only
club with a chance to catch the
MacPhailites. must merely tan
gle with very tough Cubs and
Pirates . . .
We've seen it happen in the
"bushes" and heard of it occur
ring in college ball, but until
that 17-inning Brooklyn-Cincin-
natl scorcher Monday we
thought such things didn't go on
in the major leagues ... at the
close of the 16th lrame the score
was 0-0, and when Brooklyn's
Pete Reiser whaled a homer as
darkness began to settle in the
first half of the 17th the Dodgers
did everything in their power to
hurry the inning along while
the Reds attempted to delay
play by every possible means so
that the umps would call the
game and the score would revert
to the 16th, tied at 0-0 .. . The
Dodgers' half of the inning fin
ally ended when Billy Hermun
"struck himself out," as one
wrtier put it . . .
The Yreka, (Cal.) Miners
moved into- the finals of the
Northern California league's
' Shaughnessy playoffs by defeat
ing Dorris last Sunday afternoon
8 to 8, and two localities con
, tributed some stellar work in
the Miner victory . . Dick Lewis,
playing third base, socked a pair
of doubles and Steve Crippen,
pitcher, gave up seven blows,
tanned seven, allowed only one
earned run and hit a triple and
double . . .
Cato Wrsy will be the Black
Tornado's "Frankte Albert"
when the locals toss their T
lormatlon oiiense against the
opposition this season .
Wrsy will do the ball-handling
from the quarterback spot di
rectly behind center, and
when he isn't flipping It to
iait-breaklng callbacks or the
fullback for quick bolts
through rapid-opening holes
In the forward wall, he will
fade back and lire aerials . . .
The Tigers will go Into the
Weed game Friday night with
absolutely no pre-game know
ledge of what to expect In the
way of Weed power, if any . . .
last season the Tornado hung a
terrific 41 to 19 crusher on the
Callfornlans, but two years ago
Weed came here and scared the
life out of the Bowerman eleven,
the score being 28 to 19 after

St. Louis, Giants Battle To
1 -All Tie Brooklyn Now
Game And Half Ahead.
By Judien Bailey
(Associated Press Writer)
Destiny's Dodgers can do no
wrong these days and even
when they lose fate figures out
some way to compensate them.
Brooklyn ran Into a 4-3 11
lnnlng pitfall yesterday at Cin
cinnati, and the game scarcely
had ended before darkness de
scended on St. Louis and black
ed out the Cardinals and New
York Giants in a 1-1 10-lnning
tie.
This shaved the Dodgers' Na
tional league lead from two
games to a game and a half,
but on a long-range basis the
Cardinals' tie was almost as
damaging as a defeat.
It figures out this way.
Brooklyn has won 92 games,
lost SI and has 11 to play.
St. Louis has won 89, lost
SI and has 13 to play.
Thus the Dodners will play
1S4 games this season to 1S3
for St. Louis and if both teams
lose the same number of games
Brooklyn still will take the
championship.
Werber Stars
The affair at Cincinnati was
almost equally tight. Elmer (The
Great) Riddle allowed only six
hits and didn't give an earned
run In the nine innings he work
ed. Bill Werber singled home
a run for him in the first and
knocked in two more with a
double In the seventh. But each
time errors helped Brooklyn
bounce back to tie the score
once In the second inning and
again in the ninth.
In the day's only other Na
tional league game the Boston
Braves beat the Chicago Cubs,
8-3
Chet Laabs drove In five runs
to lead the St. Louis Browns
to a 9-8 victory over the Phil
adelphia Athletics.
The Detroit Tigers bunched
their efforts to whip the Wash
ington Senators, 4 2.
the toughest sort of a battle . . .
There Is some talk that an Ice
skating rink may be built in
Klamath Falls, similar to the
one now under construction
here by the Med ford Ice Arena,
and if such is done don't be sur
prised to see some lntra-ice
hockey take its place In the
southern Oregon sports picture
. . . anyway, there will be a local
hockey league as soon as Sparky
Bourque, manager and profes
slonal Instructor of the arena,
figures enough capable skaters
are available to form a four-club
circuit . . .

SEATTLE DEFEATS

STAY TWO AHEAD
By the Associated Press
Pitching steadiness in the
clutch makes championship
baseball clubs, and Seattle quali
fies with hurlers Ilk Dick
"Kewpie" Barrett.
Moving Into the final series of
the Coast league season, Seattle
was fighting to maintain a slim
two-game lead last night when
it tangled with Los Angeles
and Barrett came through with
a four-hit pitching masterpiece
to win 2 to 1.
Sacramento stayed In the pen
nant chase by defeating Oak
land 4 to 2, but Seattle's two-
game margin over the Solons
looked impressive.
Hollywood trimmed San Diego
in both games of double-header,
clinching its first-division
berth and virtually eliminating
the third-place Padres from
championship contention.
The Stars won the opener 8
to 2, and were forced to eight
Innings in the nightcap for a 6
to 4 victory.
Ray Harrell, San Francisco
pitcher recently purchased from
Portland, won an 11 to 6 victory
over his former teammates. He
yielded 15 hits to the Beavers,
but San Francisco clouted in
eight runs in the fifth and sixth
innings to clinch the victory.
