Elliott planned to leave by car
today for Bend to attend the
annual convention of the Ore-
gon Fire Chiefs association to
morrow, Tuesday and Wednes
day. He will be accompanied
by Mrs. Elliott.

Wants Campsite Rogue Riv
er national forest headquarters
swere in receipt yesterday of a
letter from Martin C. Burns, a
lieutenant of the U. S. navy on
duty at Pearl Harbor, T. H.,
who said he wanted to lease a
campsite and cabin within the
forest and close to the river if
possible. He wrote that ever
since he visited the Rogue River
' national forest he has had the
one desire to obtain such a
place. He added that he wanted
to have the cabin when he
returns to Oregon after the
"present emergency." Headquar
ters said the forest service leases
only cabin sites and has no
cabins to lease, the leases are
renewable from year to year and
the lessees must be here to
utilize the site.
Transferred Staff Sgt. Jo
seph V. Mendrala, member of
t the U. S. air corps detachment
at Medford municipal airport
the past five years, will leave
tomorrow for Mather field, near
Sacramento, Cal., whither he
lias been transferred. When he
leaves for his new post tomor
row he will be accompanied by
Mrs. Mendrala and their two
young children, Darlene and
Victor Stanley. Sgt. Mendrala
said he has enjoyed residing in
Medford which he described as
a "nice, clean city." Sgt. and
Mrs. Mendrala have made many
friends here. The sergeant is
especially well-known in sports
men s circles, being an ardent
fisherman. No replacement for
him at the airport here has
been designated.

Townsend club No. 1 will meet
Tuesday at 8 p. m. at the Phoe
nix Christian church. The pro
gram will include discussion of
benefits of the Townsend pen
sion by three members. A ques
tion period will be held after

committee to prepare for the
meeting. The meeting Friday
night honored J. B. Hollings
worth, Corvallis, president of
the Oregon Funeral Directors
association of which the south
ern Oregon group is a unit.
Mr. Conger was one of the
speakers.

In Texas Chaplain and Mrs.
Clifton R. Pond, former Medford
residents, will reside again this
winter at 3111 Richmond ave
nue. El Paso, Texas, Mrs. Pond
stated in a letter received here
yesterday. Mrs. Pond, who has
spent the summer visiting in
Indiana while Chaplain Pond
was on maneuvers with the
army in Louisiana, was plan
ning to visit Capt. and Mrs.
Charles Holmes at Barksdale
field, Shreveport, La., when she
wrote. She said that she also
hoped to see Chaplain Pond in
Shreveport if he could get away
from the maneuvers for a day

Germany's promise for it got
but a few lines in the papers at
the time Nov. 23, 1936 the
public being much intrigued
with the events leading up to
the abdication of his Majesty
Edward VIII of England.
On thatelay Germany formal
ly adhered to the London pro
tocol for the humanization of
submarine warfare. This proto
col strictly forbade submarines
in time of war to sink a merch
ant ship until the crew, the pas
sengers and the ship's papers
were afforded a safe haven. It
was specifically stated that this
did not mean lifeboats in the
open sea, unless land were near
and the weather good. Above
all, the true safety of passengers
was made the primary consideration.

A large crowd of Elks and
their Invited guests gathered at
the Elks' picnic grounds Thurs
day night to enjoy a fine vaude
ville show, a bounteous dinner
served by "Shy" Morthland and
the various games provided for
the amusement of the multitude.
The show, imported, made a
big "hit" with the Brothers, as
did the delicious roast beef din
ner with all the trimmings. The
weather was nice and it was
unanimous opinion of all those
attending that the picnic was on
a par. if not better, than any
yet held by the local lodge.

The German reply to Presi
dent Roosevelt's no-trespass
speech bears the unmistakable
stamp of Hitler's propaganda
ministry. It U worthy of note
that the spokesman who deliv
ered it made the point that it
was not a "declaration" of the
reich's government but a "com
ment" at the request of corres
pondents, and thus the Germans
shov- plainly thut they do not
care to have it recorded historic
ally. No copies of the text were
made available.
The Germans reiterate that it
is the British blockade and not
their own U-boat tactics, which
bars freedom of the seas.
