was feared bloodshed might re
sult.

John L. Lewis, president of
the union, and other interna
tional officers have maintained
a steadfast silence concerning
the organised protest launched
three days ago. The miners are
protesting increases of monthly
dues from $1.00 to $1.50 and
the annual assessment from
$2.00 to $6.00. Dues and assess
ments are collected through the
employer by the checkoff system.
Since the outbreak began on
Tuesday 14 collieries, employing
nearly 10.0UO men, have closed;
down In the midst of one of the
region'! busiest seasons in years. '
TRAIN HITS AUTO
ON SIXTH STREET
Mrs. E. E. Vilas, 72, of Route
3 was uninjured, but her car
and two others were damaged
slightly when the northbound
Southern Pacific passenger train
struck the rear bumper of her
automobile shortly after 8:00
o'clock at the Sixth street cross
ing last night.
Following the crash, accord
ing to city police, Mrs. Vilas'
machine was thrown against
two unoccupied parked autos
registered to T. L. Edsall of 215
Washington street and C. W.
Newland of 528 Beatty street.
The cars were parked on Sixth
street.
Mrs. Vilas, the report stated,
was traveling east on Sixth
street at about 10 miles an hour.
The train was also moving at a
slow rate of speed.

Nathan J. Russell, 62, Penryn,
Calif., former Information clerk
for the Grants Pass chamber of
commerce, was under sentence
of three years in federal prison
today for shipping obscene
photographs by express.
Postal inspectors said collec
tors of photography had paid as
much as $70 for groups of Rus
sell's photogrRpns.
The pictures were of Russell's
adopted daughter who, Russell
said, was adopted from a Mon
tana orphanage in 1927 when
she was eight years old and was
returned to the institution in
1933.
Russell pleaded guilty before
Federal Judge Michael J. Roche
who commented, in passing sen
tence, "in all my experience as
a federal judge I have never seen
such a display of depraved and
obscene pictures.
Grants Pass, Sept. 11 (tP)
Nathan J. Russell, sentenced at

prisonment for distribution of
obscene photographs and de
scribed as a former information
clerk at the Grants Pass cham
ber of commerce, was a $30 a
month janitor here in 1930, said
J. R. Harvey, then secretary. He
said Russell was discharged foi
outside activities involving
sumps and semi-precious stones.

Most of the fish In Harriett
lake in the mountain lakes wild
area were killed recently by
dynamiting and a shelter near
the lake was torn down for fire
wood, Karl L. Janouch, super
visor of the Rogue River nation
al forest reported today upon his
return to Medford from a field
trip. .
Mr. Janouch said he would
report the depredations, viola
tions of federal laws, to the
proper authorities for investiga
tion and possible prosecution.
Many rustic forest signs at
Lake o' Woods were destroyed
in the past two weeks and it Is
believed the same parties were
involved in both instances, Mr.
Janouch said.
Harriett lake Is one of the
mountain lakes that have been
stocked with fish every year for
a long time and the dynamiting
nullified the delicate task of the
annual planting, Mr. Janouch
pointed out. The lake, he added,
was littered with dead fish
killed in the dynamite blast.

fruit ice cream.
