west stocks of tinned fruit, vege j
tables and fish are nearly!

as fast as merchants fill them, j
Wholesalers estimated Pacific!
northwest canned goods prices
are 10 per cent higher than last
year. Other sections have fared
even worse, they said.
Fish Shortage I

supplies. Tuna and crab ship

soared, and a consequent lift in
retail prices is expected.
The Alaskan salmon pack is
running 1,500.000 cases more
than the 5,000,000 put up last
year, but British and U. S. armed
forces are taking a large por
tion. The Columbia river salmon In
dustry has promised 20 per crnt
of the total pack to the U. S.
Alaska packers have pledged;
most of their top grades and 10
to 15 per cent of the lesser grades;
to the government. i
The price of the most popular!
grade of salmon is up from $1.65
a dozen cans to $1.75. Once at
$2, it dropped only because of
the heavier-than-expected catch.
Reserves Lacking
Fruit and vegetable proces
sors, who usually fill their ware
houses at this time of year, are
unable to store up reserves.
Carryover from the 1940 pack
was one of the smallest in his
tory. The pea industry put of
3.000.000 cases, but only 20.000
remained this year. A million:
cases of canned apples dwindled
to 2,000. j
Then came harvesting diffi-j
culties. The bean crop was pro-j
mising, but lack of pickers cut
heavily into the pack. A hot
spell damaged berries. An anti
cipated prune pack of 3,000.000
pounds has shrunk to 2.000,000
because of weather damage and
lack of harvesters.
Pear Crop Helps
The pear crop, however, prom
ises to be the largest in Pacific
northwest history, and apple
growers, almost wiped out by
the loss of foreign markets two
years ago, are optimistic. Can

grades of apples, but because of
