Chapter One
Pick-np
PAM was face down on
the towel she had
spread on the warm
yellow sand ot South
Beach. She didn't
bother to turn when she felt
the cool, damp nose on her
legs. She wondered vaguely
which particular beach dog
was giving her friendly
once-over.
But when she felt a firm body
settle agtinit bar, she turned to
squint at the newcomer. Pam's
eyes opened wide. Slowly, fearful
of disturbing the animal, the tat
up and atared at the soft, fluffy
gray-blue fur.
"Why, you gorgeous thlngl"
she exclaimed. rBut what in the
world are you?"
Blue Blaze answered with a
very gay wagging of a very short
tail. Her blue chin-whiskers gave
her a slightly humorous-air In
spite ot the gentle earnestness of
her brown eyes peering up
through a silky fringe of eye
brow. Pam
Pam was about to put out her
hand to touch the dog's beautiful
coat when a vole oehlnd her
stayed the movement
"Leave it to Blaze to pick nice
friends. She's got a gift for it"
It was a pleasant voice friendly
and sincere.
A young man dropped down on
the beach beside Pam with an
asy: "May 1?"
Pam had never seen Jerry
Winthrop before, but she knew
who he was. All Key West had
heard about the handsome Blue
Blaze, Jerry's champion Kerry
Blue terrier, the first of her breed
to be brought to the island.
And all Key West knew of the
Winthropes whose yscht was th
most palatial in the blue wa
ters of the basin; whose cars
were th most expensive to roll
over the white msrl streets of the
quaint city; who lived elegantly,
blithely and carelessly, and
whose goings and comings were
news in any part of the world.
"I've never known Blaze to err
In selecting her friends," Jerry
Winthrop continued. "She has an
Instinct for th right people."
"And does that work the other
way, too?" A faint smile lighted
Pam's eyes
Jerry was thoughtful not sure
of her meaning. Then he laughed
gently. "I se what you meant
Well. I must be all right or Blaze
wouldn't have m a a master."
Pam silently agreed with
Blaze. There was a pleasant hon
esty about young Winthrop'
dark good locks. Black hair swept
smoothly back from a face that
was open and bore the subtle
stamp of breeding. His gray eyes
were steady. He was tanned from
hours in th sun.
"Lot me prove it to you?" There
was sn eager not in his vole. "I
mean, that Blaze is right about
me. I m Gerald Winthrop. Jerry
to you. My friends call me that.
"And so you think I should?"
she asked hesitantly.
"I dol There are a dozen rea
sons why you should. For instance-

"What do you mean exit?"
Jerry asked.
"Oh. I'm not chasing you from

Pam said. "You're just exiting

You see, I hive other things to

"Nice things?"

a week, a month or a winter,
learning to do things only wealth
could do and then waited hope
fully through the long, damp sum

she said. So her husband. Peter
Quellerton, Third, had made a
rite of getting the most beautiful
croton he could find to be given

come a matter of comment in Key
West, with their bright reds and
yellowj, purples and browns, and
their foliage that grew in in
finite variety of size and shape.
That bedge made a line of color
all across the yard. Its individual

When finally there was room

had asked ruefully of Peter:
"Now what? I must do some
thing to mark our happy years,
and It must be something alive.
"Here, my sweet," Peter had
