Medford's newest cut-rate drug
x'ore, will open at 323 East
Main street in this city Satur
day, according to an announce
ment today by Mare B. Jarmin,
owner and operator. The new
store, modern in every detail
. and replete with prescription,
drug, toiletry, gift and candy
departments, will make its de
,but tomorrow morning and a
store-wide grand opening sale
will be featured.
Marc Jarmin came to this city
in 1925 and associated himself
with Charles Wood in the opera
tion of a drug store at Sixth
and Central streets. This con
cern later moved to Main and
Central streets before the part
nership dissolved. Later Mr.
Jarmin opened a new drug store
at 30 North Central avenue
under the firm name of Jar
min's for Drugs, where business
was conducted until 1938. Need
for a complete rest made it
necessary for him to retire tem
porarily from active business.
After an extended rest and
vacation trip. Mr. Jarmin re
turned his activities in the drug
business here, associating him
self with a well known local
drug store. Construction of his
new Penny-Wise store has ex
tended over a period of several
weeks.
One of the features of the
new Penny-Wise store will be
a handsome, modern fountain
with 18 stools and the very
latest-type bar. Fountain lunch
eonettes with coffee, sand
wiches, salads, soups, etc., will
be served, with Jarmin's own
Ice cream featured in various
tasty dishes. Ice cream manu
facturing facilities to accommo
date 140 gallons at all times
has been installed.
Included in the stock of Jar
min's Penny-Wise drug store
will be full line of gifts and
sundries, cut-rate tobaccos and
drugs. One unique department
of this new store will display
party novelties. Ruscraft greet
ing cards will also be carried
in stock.
Mr, Jarmin, who has had
. many years experience in the
drug business and as a regis
tered pharmacist, will person
ally manage his new attractive
store and supervise the well
stocked prescription department.
Dallas, Sept. 5 (JP First de
gree murder charges were filed
here yesterday against Dewey
Jackson, 43, logger, by District
Attorney Bruce Spaulding, and
Jackson was bound over to the
grand Jury.
Jackson is charged with the
fatal shooting Wednesday of
Joe McCoy, 40, Indian, at
Grande Ronde. Sheriff T. B.
Hooker said Jackson confessed
the shooting, Jackson charging
McCoy had been giving atten
tions to Mrs. Jackson.

this week brought the first run
of cutthroat trout into coastal
streams and salmon trolling at
the mouth of the Columbia has
been excellent, the state game
departments weekly bulletin
said today.

BARUCH REPEATS
DEFENSE IN NEED
OF SINGLE HEAD

new federal agency set out to
day to enlist even the smallest
industrial plants in the national
armament manufacturing drive
but one of President Roosevelt's
principal advisers repeated his
conviction that a single admin
istrator is urgently needed for
the whole defense production
program.
Bernard M. Baruch. who con
quered a similar military pro
duction problem 24 years ago,
called not only for a single
defense chief but for a blanket
ceiling on prices.
Last night, a few hours after
Baruch's blunt criticism, the
president announced creation of
a division of contract distribu
tion in the office of production
management, to be headed by
Floyd B. Odium, New York i
financier.
A White House statement said
the new agency was formed to
further "a determined move on
the part of the administration
to help the smaller business
units of the country obtain a
fair share of the defense orders, i
and to prevent, so far as possi
ble, dislocation of industry and
unemployment of workers in
plants where production has
been curtailed by priorities and
material shortages."
Tall, white-haired Baruch had
no immediate comment on this
development. But he was no
more than out of the White:
House door after lunching with
the president yesterday when
he told reporters in plain words
what he thought should be done
to speed vital production.
Baruch saw the new seven
member supply priorities and
allocations board, headed by
Vice President Wallace, as only
a "faltering step forward." He
expressed the hope it would
work, but he asserted:
"The one thing this picture
needs is one-man authority."

NAZI DYE PACTS
Washington, Sept. 8 VP)
Acting Attorney General Fran
cis Biddle announced today con
sent decrees tinder which four
important American drug com
panies must break contracts
with the German dye trust
which prevent United States
firms from doing business in
South America.
The two decrees, based on
civil action charging anti-trust
law violation by restricting mar
kets, particularly in Latin
American countries, were filed
with Fedaral District Judge
Samuel Mandelbaum in New
York.
The actions named Sterling
Products, Inc., Alba Pharmaceu
tical company. Inc., the Bayer
company. Inc., and Winthrop
Chemical company, and Albert
H. Diebold and William Weiss,
president and chairman, respect
ively of Sterling.
ON CANADA TRIP
Attorney Charles Kumei
doesn't care to make another
1300-mile trek into the primitive
areas of Canada to fish because
he believes that Diamond lake
and certain parts of the Rogue
river, on occasion at least, afford
just as good sport.
This Mr. . Reames told the
Lions club at its weekly dinner
meeting Wednesday in the Hotel
Medford as he recounted the ex
pedition he made recently with
his 13-year-old son Tommy. Not
that Mr. Reames and his son
didn't have a thrilling time. Far
from it. He descriebd the Cana
dian wilds as a fisherman's para
dise, told of the abundance of
trout and indicated that he
wouldn't have missed the ex
perience for anything.
The club was entertained by
two of Eve Prentice's accordion
pupils. Maxwell Peirce, Jr and
Patricia Dahl, the young lady
also giving a tap dance.
