doorman at the Esquador came
out onto the sidewalk and blew
his whistle. A cruising taxi rolled

ment, and the night seemed to
press down on the city outside and

It might have been an hour er
, lust a few minutes ago that Steve
had left the room. I wasn't aware
of time or of people or of any-
' thing but the numb feeling that
seepea inrougn my ooay ana me
sharp ache in my head.
There was a little icy ridge
" around the frame of the window
and I scratched it with my nail
and it shredded and fell off. Be
hind me, pacing the floor, Jeff
spoke musingly.
"You've learned that trick from
CaroL That trick of draping your
self in the window. Thais how
ahe was sitting this afternoon be
fore . . ."
"Jeff, let's not talk. Not yet"
We lapsed into silence again
and I closed my eyes. I tried to
think things out. to think what
I should say to Carol, how I would
answer what she said to me. My
mind closed on me and it was use
less. "Haila!
Jeff's voice wasn't musing now.
It was urgent and excited. I
swung around to face him, almost
frightened.
"Hails, listen. This afternoon
. , . this afternoon at the party
when that shot came through the
window 1"
"Yes?"
"Tell me everything that hap
pened after we got here."
"But why?"
"Please! His hands were work
ing nervously together. "We got
htre a little after one. Think,
Hails, try to remember. What did
we do? what did we do exactly?"
"We talked to Carol for a few
minutes," I said. My mind went
struggling back mechanically over
the afternoon. "And then Clint
Bowers came with his flowers and
Carol went into the kitchen. Is
that hat you mean?"
"Yes. Yes, go on."
"Then, in a moment, she came
back with the bottle and some
glasses. You opened the cham
pagne and we drank."
"Where were we then, can you
remember, Haila? Where were we
sitting, you and I? And what was
Carol doing and where was Clint
Bowers?"
Suddenly the picture flashed
before me, clearly, like a sharp
bright etching. "You and I sat
there on the couch, your feet were
on the coffee table and I was busy
knocking them off. Clint was in
the big armchair in the far corner
and the champagne was on the ta
ble right beside him. Carol was
here where I am, in the window
(eat I remember thinking how
pretty the light looked in her
hair.
"And then?" Jeff was a moving
blur, pacing up and down be
fore me.
"Carol told us she was going to
marry Steve. She said it was
wrong of her, it wasn't fair to
Steve. But she was going to marry
him anyway. I thought how brave
and honest she was. And then we
congratulated her and said it . . .
It was wonderful. And Clint spoke
then, I think. He suggested that
we have another drink. He said,
'Carol, you're first,' or something
like that and she went over to
him. She had her glass in her
hand. And when she got almost to
him, the shot came."

"C'mon, Eve and Philip. His
big speech. Where is it in the
play?
"Almost at the end of tha third
act Eve was supposed to be i:
ranging flowers on the dining ta
ble while he talked. She said that
there weren't any flowers on the
table, that either Tommy or
Phoebe Thompson was to blame
for forgetting them. She said she
had to do something while ha
droned along and Ashley said sha
needn't have rattled the complete
set of silver, the glasses and tha
plates. Just upsetting the table
would have been more effective.
Ashley heavy sarcasm. There,

fighting about and what differ
ence does it make?"
"Were the flowers there?"

I stood before him in the door

heard myself gulp as I spoke.

He held my hand tight "What

frightened. I'm afraid for vou. I'm
afraid for myself, to stay here
along with . . . with Carol. When
I thought she was . . . before 1
knew about her. I didn't mind. It
seemed worth while then and I
could be brave. But now, now I'm
scared. I don't want to I'sv here
with her. If someone tried now

championship tourney will open
with qualifying rounds tha next
two week-ends, Joe Kovalak,

Qualifying rounds for men,
