Portland, representing Pope &
Talbott, has a shiver when he
thinks of what might have been
had his efforts to sell a quan
tity of waste land to a farmer
for $5 an acre been successful.
This "waste" land is the great
est alunite deposit in the state
of Washington and is sufficient
to keep an aluminum plant in
operation for possibly half a
century. When and where this
deposit will be opened and
transformed into aluminum is
undecided, but it can sustain a
plant independent of the govern
ment and private operations for
years, and the plant could be
located with equal ease either
In Washington or Oregon; on
a railroad and highway or on
Puget sound or the Columbia
river.
This deposit, no great distance
from Kelso, is four miles in
length, one and one-half miles
wide and is 60 feet deep. It Is
-estimated that there are 250
000,000 tons In the deposit.

sis was obtained and the clay
showed 52.6 percent aluminum.
The lay of the land is such that
It can be mined with a steam
shovel; no tunnels, no drifts,
no shoring nothing required
but a stout shovel and a few
men. Ii would be like digging
an excavation. The material can
be handled for 23 cents a ton.
the deposit is calculated to be
worth $250,000,000 a quarter
of a billion dollars ready to be
carted away. And only a short
time ago any farmer could have
bought It for a payment of
$6,000.
Pope & Talbott, on whose
property (already logged off) the
deposit has been found, are per
haps the owners of more im
portant holdings in Washington,
e Oregon and California than any
other concern. They are reput
edly owners of 1,000 lot in
Seattle, corner lots with many
of the city's principal buildings.
They are now owners of the
McCormack steamship line and
own the McCormack sawmill
and most of the city of St.
Helens, on the Columbia river,
Oregon. They practically own
Port Gamble, on Puget sound.
Their holdings consist princi
pally of steamships, lumber
mills, real estate and Improved
property and now comes the
alunite deposit greater than all
the rest, if the estimates are
correct.
FROM Machias, Maine, the
progenators of the firm came to
the Pacific northwest around the
Horn during the gold rush to
California. Accumulating gold
dust, they settled down at Port
Gamble, began carving a settle
ment out of the forest, loaded
a ship with lumber and sent
it trading for any commodity
showing a profit. A. B. Ham
mond, famed lumberman, later
with operations at Astoria and
at Garibaldi. Ore., learned the
lumber trade from the outfit
at Port Gamble. So. shrewd 1
were the trades of Pope &l
Talbott that they, accumulated I
immense wealth and diversified
their Interests.
In course of time they bought
and logged "the area where the
alunite is. The bare land was
unproductive and the company
sought repeatedly to dispose of
it to anyone who would take
it with a small down payment.
Once in a while a company
which was making tiles would
purchase a truckload of the soil
and use it as a finish, but that
outfit was small and discon
tinued its buying.

THE alunite Is so situated that
the clay can be placed on barges
and taken down the Cowlitz
river to the Columbia and across
to the Oregon side at St. Helens
Columbia City or Rainier. It
can readily be transported up
the Columbia to Vancouver, to
Troutdale or Cascade Locks.
The material can be taken to
Centralia by truck if a produc
tion plant should be located
there, or to Tacoma or Seattle,
where Pope & Talbott control
so much real estate.
While this is, so far as known,
the greatest deposit of alunite
clay in the Pacific northwest,
there are other sources of this
raw material for aluminum. In
addition to this clay in Cowlitz
county, there are deposits in
Whatcom, King, Chelan, Spo
kane and Whitman counties
Washington. In Oregon, thus
far, no Important deposit has
been discovered, although clay
with a low content of aluminum
has been found in scattered
sections.
Process for recapturing alumi
num from alunite is different
from the process of extracting
aluminum from bauxite, but the
method is comparatively well
known and is now being used
by the Japanese, and experi
ments have successfully been
conducted' by the laboratory at
Pullman, Wash. Principal in
gredient is an abundance of
cheap power, and that Is avail
able from the government hydro
developments at Grand Coulee
and Bonneville.
IT may interest housewives
of Oregon and Washington who
recently parted with their alum
inum pots and pans for the
national defense program to
learn that navy department
asked for priorities on alumi
num to make several thousand
straight back and adjustible
back chairs. The request was
turned down flat by OPM

Senator Maloney (D-Conn) said
today that numerous vital de
fense industries along the east
ern seaboard "are terrified be
cause they have only four or
five days supply of bunker oil."
The chairman of the special
senate committee Investigating
shortages of gasoline and petro
leum products offered this com
ment as he questioned the wis
dom of diverting so many Amer
ican tankers to other than nor
mal transportation of petroleum
products to the eastern seaboard.
Maloney's comment came after
Rear Admiral Emory S. Land,
chairman of the maritime com
mission, had testified that the
shortages were "caused by
pseudo-gentleman by the name
of Hitler and further caused by
the laws of congress.
Maloney questioned this, say
ing that it had not been the
intentio not congress when it
approved the lease-lend program
and other defense measures to
cause any severe hardships on
Industry or citizens.
"I'm not blaming congress,"
Land said, adding that congres
sional approval of the adminis
tration defense program forced
certain burdens.
The senators also learned that
the Pacific coast soon may face
the same curtailment of gasoline
sales now effective along the
eastern seaboard.

Soak the gelatin five minutes in j
the cold water, simmer, covered for j

sugar and boiling water. Strain, re- j

gelatin, stir until dissolved, add
Juice and pour Into a mold and chill
until firm. Vnmold on lettuce and
top with dressing.
