More fines were recorded to
day on the books of the justice
of the peace court as the state
police check-up of motorists con
tinued. Ralph J. Tate, 19, Ashland,
was fined $1.50 and $4 50 costs
this morning on a charge of
operating a car without a regis
tration card.

William R. Coleman is to set
a date for the trial.

Jacksonville grade school will
open Monday, September 8 and
the high school the following
Monday, September 15, it was
announced today.
A week's deferment in open
ing the high school was decided
upon when a survey showed
that 50 per cent of the students
were employed in orchard and
packing house work.
All grade and high school
students who have not previ
ously attended school here must
register on September 4 or 5.

REPORT OF VICHY
Vichy, Unoccupied France,
Aug. 28. m The Jibuti radio
announced today that four Brit
ish warships and a flotilla of
armed launches and planes have
established control over French
Somaliland territorial waters.
The speaker said the situation
had reached a dramatic point
with all FrencU blockade-running
launches stopped and their
cargoes dumped overboard or
seized.
British ships have not left
territorial waters of the French
east African colony for 10 days.

It reported that Jibuti, the
chief port of French Somaliland
and the Gulf of Aden terminus
of the railroad to Addis Ababa,
has been cut off from Turba,
in the tiny French possession of
Sheikh-Said across the gulf on
the Arabian shore, and the

island on which it is dependent
for its water supply.
The French Somaliland gov
ernor was said to have made
another formal protest against
the British blockade Monday.

Sheriff Syd I. Brown today
reported the return last night
of Peggv Riddle, 15. daughter
of Mrs. Marvin O. Riddle of 824
West Second street, and Dona
Miller, 18. an Oklahoma gin
who came here recently. A
search for the girls was begun
after they had been reported
missing. Both girls worked at
the Dutch Mill on South River
side avenue.
Sheriff Brown quoted the
girls as laying they left the
place of their employment aDout
10:30 Sunday night with a
couple of fellows and they had
since been driving around north
ern California. They returned
with the boys last evening. They
knew the boys only as "Dick
and "Bob," the sheriff stated
adding that an investigation was
being made to establish their
identity.

Ralph K. Davles, acting petro
leum coordinator, announced to
day that gasoline supplies for
filling stations in the east would
be reduced 15 per cent in Sep
tember compared with July.
Davles' testimony opened a
senate investigation of threat
ened oil shortages. He present
ed a mass of figures which he
said showed that the eastern
coast faced an actual shortage
of both gasoline and oil for
heating and industry this winter.
The east coast faced a deficit
of 27,800.000 barrels of petro
leum products during the last
four months of this year, Davies
testified. He said the reduction
in gasoline supplies to filling
stations would help meet this
shortage.
If present methods fail to
eliminate danger of shutdowns
for Industry and home heating
plants, Davies said officials were
ready to operate a rigid ration
ing plan. But he added they
hoped to avoid such drastic
action.
Davies flatly disputed rumors
he said had been circulated that
the shortage "is being played up
to foster war psychology: that
a shortage has been created arti
ficially to assure passage of a
pipeline bill" or that a shortage
of gasoline "was deliberately
precipitated."
