In The
Day
By Frank Jenkins
fOT spot in today's (Tuea-
day's) news:
Iran's government still as
serts PUBLICLY it will fight
the invading British and Rus
sians. PRIVATELY th police of
Teheran (Iran capital) issue
orders to 18 German business
men to get out within two
weeks.
RECALL here the Ankara ru-
mor several days ago that
Iran will put up for Hitler's
benefit a good TALKING show
ot resistance but wont fight.
As these words are written.
it sounds like a good Inside
tip.
THE British are striking swift-
ly (using air-borne troops In
the German manner) along the
railroad from the head of the
Persian gulf to Teheran. They
are also moving eastward from
the Iraq border near Bagdad.
Their field of operations takes
in the entire Iranian oil area.
The Russians, using Cossack
cavalry, are boiling down from
the Soviet boundary between
the Black and the Caspian seas.
'ollowing the railroad leading to
Tabris. They are said to have
another army east of the Cas
pian, ready to move in if
needed.
The first British move waa to
seize the great Abadan oil re
finery a few miles up from the
mouth of the Tigris river where
it flows Into the Persian gulf.
This single refinery, the dis
patches tell us, could produce
enough fuel to keep the entire
British navy in operation.
This will give you some idea
of Iran a Importance.
A GLANCE at your map will
show you how Turkey must
be sweating these days. Turkey
would be tempting route for
use by Hitler In striking at this
new British-Russian threat in
Iran.
Remember that a prime ob
jective of the Iran campaign is
to provide an all-weather routo
for transport of supplies to Rus
sia which, with the Industrial
Ukraine gone, will need them.
TODAY'S "dispatches tell us
that WAVELL, from India,
is directing the British cam
