Tom, Belligerent
"VOU told Tommy ibout you
and Steve? Jeff prompted.
"Ym." Carol uid. "He waa ten
ribly upset. He talked like a dra
matic little boy. He said he'd kill
me, he said he'd kill Steve too.
But he didn't mean it any more
than If he were a kid speakinf
some kind or piece in scnooL
"Pretty progressiva school,'
Jeff muttered.
"I almost had to shove him out
And then the next morning at re
hearsal he came to me first thing.
He said all the things that you d
have to say when you've been
drunk and acted like an idiot
And he apologized all over the
place.
"And wished you happiness?"
Carol smiled wryly. "No. He
didn t go that lar. But I asxea mm
not to tell anyone about Steve
and me and he said he wouldn't
And he kept his word too.
Jeff stood up. "You damn little
dope! I guess they'll have to riddle

ly believe that the finger's on
vou. You've been so close to death
three times that you could have
heard it whir by if you'd lis
tened, but you still think no one

what do vou think all this busi

"It wasn't Tommy,' sha said
stubbornly, almost crying.
"No, it wasn't Tommy. It
wasn't anybody! It's all done with
mirrors!" He was yelling at her,
but she met his angry gaze and
didn't flinch an eyelash. He
turned and howled at me, "How
about those phone calls7
"Amelia was home. I recognized
her voice. I didn't get anyone
else."
"Neither did I The thing waa a
fizzle except for eliminating
Amelia. Ana tnat s a great striae
In the right direction. I was sure
that sniping out of a hotel win
dow was Amelia's meat." He
plopped down in a chair in dis
gust. "Jeff, things are beginning to
look a bit thick for Tommy. I
mean besides his threatening
Carol." I told him about Tommy
and his message that he was not
to be disturbed at the hotel. Jeff
aat like a ramrod listening.
"And you're sure he wasn't
there?"
"I know it. I let them page him
all over the hotel. He wasn't in
the building, there's no doubt of
tnat."
"I guess we'll go and have a
chat with Tom Neilson."
Carol sat up wtih a Jerk.
"Please, please don't go to Tom
my. He'd hate it if he thought
you knew about him."
Jeff said sarcastically, "We're
not going to like it very much
naving a corpse around the apart
ment." She had him bv both arms.

tell Steve about It. Promise me
that He's got enough to worry

"I won't tell him. Stop shak-

The door banged open and a
fair-sized mob poured in and took
over. Peterson was there, and two
policemen in uniform and several
others whom I remembered hav
ing seen at the theater the night
Eve North was murdered.
They began milling around, ex
amining the fragments of my pic
ture on the floor, digging in the
wall for the buried bullet photo
graphing every conceivable thing
in the room. My life from this
f olnt on promised to have very
ittle to do with that thing called
privacy. I sat close to Carol and
held her hand while she answered
the barrage of questions they
fired at her.
We all heard the pounding of

Brown, breathless and white
faced, burst into the room. For a
moment he didn't see Carol and
his eyes searched the room in
terror. Then Carol ran to him.
He clasped her tight In his arms
and neither spoke. They stood
clinging to each other and there
was a long, choking aob from

Jeff tapped me on the shoulder.
"Come on, we've got some work
to do."
I looked at Steve and Carol
again. He had drawn her into the
corner by the kitchen and wedged
her there, standing over her like
a bulldog. "If he guards her this
assiduously from the police," I
thought "he ought to do all
right by any stray murderers who
happen around. I grabbed my
wraps and, nodding to Jeff, fol
lowed him out.
The last thing I heard was
Peterson s voice: "All right Mr.
Brown. I want to ask you a few
questions."
No Alibi
TpOM NEILSON glowered at us
over the rim of a rve hiehhall
"Who the hell cares hy I wasn't
In my room? The Bristol isn't a
enough to get a girl down, he was
bent on being difficult
Looking steadily at Tom, Jeff
said: "Nobody givea a damn
right now why you weren't in
your room except Haila and me.
But in an hour or so there will
be about ten cops who are going
to find out or else."
"Why?" Tom was belligerent.
Jeff gave it to him bluntly, "Be
cause after you left word at your
hotel desk that you were not to
be disturbed someone took a shot
at Carol from the sixth floor of
the Esquador Hotel."
Tom'a empty glass went down
on the table with a resounding
bang. "Was she . . ."
Jeff said: "No. She's all right
They missed her."
Tom shook the Ice around In
his -glass and drained it "Carol
leads a charmed life. She ought to
go with a circus. Poisoned,
stabbed and ahot at and still in
the pink of condition." He beck
oned the waiter and asked for an
other rye highball.
"Why did you leave word that
you weren't to be disturbed when
you had no intention of ataying
in your room?"
"I had every intention of atay
ing In my room. I didn't want to
be disturbed because I waa going
to take a nap."
Jeff smiled. "You're not going
to tell us that you were in your
room. That you were so sound
asleep you didn't hear the phone."
"Oh, for God's sake! No, I didn't
go to bed at all. Almost as soon
as I got to my room Tony Eldridge
came in. He told me that Max
Shuman was sending a company
of Peter and Paul to London.

again. So I went out in a hurry.
I didn't stop to call the operator
and tell her. Why should I? And
that's all there is to it."
"Where is Shuman's office?"
"On Fifty-third, just east of
Madison."
"What time were you there?"
"I got there about five. Shuman
waa out. I talked to his secretary
for a while and left about five-
fifteen."
"Five-fifteen, huh?" Jeff rooted
around in the little wicker basket
and found me a potato chip. "And
the shot came through the win
dow at exactly five-thirty."
Still In Love
THERE waa alarm in Tommy'i
voice when he spoke again.
"Look, Jeff, I know what you're
thinking! Shuman's office ia only
a couple of blocks from the Es
quador. I could have got up there
in time to lane tnat snot at
Carol!"
"What did you do, Tommy?"
"Well, I . . ." He hesitated
"Damn it! This would happen to
me. Well, I got here about six
thirty. On my way here I stopped
at a bar on Broadway and had a
couple of drinks." Jeff opened hii
mouth and Tommy said angrily,
"No, I can't prove I was there! 1
didn't see anyone I knew. And
the place was Jammed; I don't
think the bartender or anyone
would remember me. What the
hell are you trying to do to me,
Jeff!"
"Nothing. I Just wish vou had
an alibi for five-thirty this after
noon." Tommy Jumped to his feet un
letting the glasa the waiter had
placed oeiore mm. Do you mean
to say I'm going to be mixed up
in this thing because I was going
around minding my own busi
ness? What the hell. Jeff! Listen,
I didn't take a shot at Carol. I
didn't try to poison her and I
didn't stab Eve North. I don't
want to kill Carol! For God's sake,
why should I?" ,
"You said you were going to,"
I said.
He sat as quickly as he had
risen, but much more quietly. He
looked from one to the other of
us and his lips were very white.
He said bitterly, "So she told you
about that."
I rushed to Carol's defense.
"No, she didn't tell us! She never
breathed a word of it and wild
horses probably couldn't have
dragged it from her until we al
ready knew. It happens that you
were overheard. Bv a very help
ful next door neighbor."
"What did Carol say?"
"Just that she saw you were
falling In love with her and she
waa In love with Steve Brown. So
she told you and you blew up and
threatened her. And you needn't
bother explaining that you were
drunk and in a temper and didn't
mean it because she's already
done that for you."
"I'd rather not talk about It Let
Carol do the talking."
"What about you and Alice Mc
Donald, Tommy?"
'There s nomine about Alice
McDonald and me except that
we've known each other a long
time. We're good friends."
"She knew about you and
Carol, didn't she? And she didn't
like it. It couldn't have been that
she was Jealous of Carol?"

American soil from heirs In the reich, who held lien on the property at the time of the
American owner's death. Located only four miles from the town, the land is now being

In 1529 Alvaro da Saavedra "discovered" a small Island In the North Pacific, and It was
