'High Tor' Runs Gamut From
Comedy to Tender Romance

As tn most plays written in poetic form there Is about "High
Tor" a feeling of something broad and symbolical. It is a beaut
iful play, staged in s striking and dramatic setting, with a fin
balance of suspense, hilarious comedy, pathos, and romance. Its
characters are widely varied, ranging from the idealistic to the
earth-bound. The author. Maxwell Anderson, is considered by
most critics to be America's greatest playwright.
High Tor is a Jagged mouit-1
tain rising among the Palisades
on the west bank ot the lower
Hudson. The actual scenes are
laid on the flat trap-rock sum
mit directly above that part ot
the river known as the Tappan
Zee.
High Tor Is owned by Van
Dorn, a proud and stubborn
Dutchman who la Eealously
guarding It from the civilization
closing around. He wants his
life there to remain wild and
free.
. they won't get our
mountain! not if I have to shoot
them as they come they won't
get our mountain .
Says Van Dorn, and how he
clings to this deep feeling for
the land, wild as the Indian
knew it, is the main poignant
theme ot the play. In at first re
fusing to sell High Tor to the
trap-rock company who keeps
heckling him with offers, Van
Dorn is deserted by Judith, a
practical girl who loves him but
who would have him move to
the city, find a decent Job and
plan for the future.
However In the end, van uorn
decides there is no holding the
age back. He sells.

The scenery has been strik
ingly designed by Otto Wilda,
Instructor ot art. The installa
tion of a huge 'steam shovel,
large enough to swing two men
above the stage is alone a tri
umph In stagecraft. The lighting
is at all times effective, reveal
ing the bold dark rocks against
a deep electric blue.
