When Theron W. Bean and
Harold F. Chrisman finished
their itudies together at Jeffer
son high school in Portland,
they parted company, Bean go
ing to Stanford and Chrisman
to Oregon State. After 1917
they did not see each other
again until yesterday. Then they
met here.
Bean is now an army captain.
constructing quartermaster in
charge of cantonment work
here. Chrisman' is now an army
major, in the armys' finance
department at Washington, D. C.
Chrisman was here yesterday
on a leave of absence, his fam
ily having bought a home in
Ashland. He saw Bean's name
in the Mail Tribune, called at
the armory to see if it was his
om iriena. Both men were
greatly surprised. Neither knew
the other was in the army. It
was a great reunion.
CONFERENCE SET
Representatives of a number
of federal agencies are expected
to confer with local officials in
the Hotel Medford at 10 a. m.
tomorrow on various phases of
defense planning in connection
with the proposed army can
tonment, Frank J. Van Dyke
civilian coordinator, announced
yesterday.
All municipal and county of
ficials and representatives of
other agencies interested in the
cantonment problems are invit
ed to be present, Mr. Van Dyke
saia. Among tne federal men
expected were L. R. Durkee,

The Illustrious English poet,
William Blake, once observed
that the most intriguing tads
were also th- most crooked
roads. In the state of Oregon
no routes offer access to s .iter
scenic beauty and variety than
the winding, twisting roads
which curve dragon-like
through the rich timber re
serves owned by the Amer....i
government.
These roads are little known
to the average motorist. They
appear on few maps. Signs
rarely point them out. No ad
vertising hails their attractions.
Yet they penetrate magnific
vistas, grand camping sites and
unexcelled fishing grounds.
Map Shows Routes
As a feature of the annual
motorlog series sponsored Joint
ly by The Oregonian and the
Oregon State Motor associa
tion, a map showing the best
forest roads is published along
with this article. The informa
tion was provided by F. V.
(Jack) Horton, director of re
creation for the forest service in
the Pacific northwest. The map
was drawn up with the needs
and problems and desires of
the average automobile tourist
foremost in mind.

8 tablespoons chopped olives
13 teaspoon salt
teaspoon paprika
3 tablespoons catsup
cup grated cheese
Mix steak, olives, salt, paprika and
catsup. Shape Into cakea half an
Inch thick. Brush with melted but
ter and broil 5 minutes. Turn,
sprinkle , with cheese and broil 6
minutes. With hos- buttered rolls.
Tustle Salad
3 oupa shredded lettuce
1 cup chicory
3 cups siloed cucumbers
H cup sliced radishes
4 cup cooked asparagus
3 tablespoons chopped onions
3 tablespoons chopped green peppers
3 tablespoons chopped pickles
4 cup French dressing
Garlic clove
Rub a salad bowl with cut garlic
clove. Mil In ingredient and chill.
SUr several times with 3 forks to
blend flavors.
Lemon Ice Cream
8 eggs, beaten
3 8 cup sugar
H cup corn syrup (light)
14 teaspoon salt
1 3 cup lemon Julos
1 teaspoon grated lemon peel
1 eup milk
1 cup cream

Breitenbush road. Mount

ing route leaves the Wapinitia
cutoff not far from Barlow piss
and extends southward toward
the Santiam. Remarkable scenic
vistas of both eastern Oregon
and the Willamette valley are
afforded.
Clear lake road. Willamette
national forest. Between the
McKenzie pass highway and the
Santiam pass, this wilderness
thoroughfare extends along the
ridge of the Cascade mountains.
It passes Clear lake and goes
within walking distance of in
numerable waterfalls.
Road Reaches Border
Siskiyou mountains road,
Rogue river national forest. In
a great horseshoe swing, this
road stretches from Ashland to
the California border and then
northward again to the Apple
gate river. Excellent camp
grounds dot its course. The for
est service has fixed up many
picnic sites, such as at Dead
Indian springs, and there are
numerous places to swim and
fish.
Century drive, Deschutes na
tional forest This road winds
across the uplands between
Bend and McCredie springs.
Lakes feature'its course. Count
less lakes are a stone's throw
from the road Odell lake. Elk
dlents and stir well. Pour Into ster
ilised freezer, cover tightly and cover
with six parts chopped lea to one
part coarse salt. Freeze.
In a mechanical refrigerator, pour
mixture into tray. When it Is half
frozen, turn Into a bowl and beat
two minutes with egg beater. Return
to tray, freeze.

4-lb. slice ham
13 whole cloves
Vi cup brown sugar
I teaspoon cinnamon
4 teaspoon powdered cloves
cup crushed plueappla
H cup cooked aprlcota
3 tablespoons lemon Julca
I 8 teaspoon dry mustard
Stick cloves in ham. .Arranga In
shallow baking pan and cover with
sugar and spices. Add Ingredients
snd Ud. Bake 2 hours In slow
oven (275). Bast every 20 minutes.
Serve hot or cold.
Spinach Marseilles
3 lba. spinach
3 tablespoons butter
3 egg yolks, beaten
1 8 teaspoon salt
i teaspoon paprika
t) teaspoon minced chives
or onions
t teaspoon minced parsley
Wash spinach and place, dripping,
in kettle, cover tightly and boll 10
minutes. Drain. Add Ingredients,
reheat and serve.
Peach Fie Glorified
8 cups sliced peaches
cuo sugsr
4 tablespoons flour
teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon Julca
'4 cup water
t tablespoon butter
1 teaspoon almond extract
44 teaspoon vanilla
teaspoon grated lemon rind
(optional )
I baked pie crust
Mix peaches and sugar and crush
lightly. Add flour, salt. Julca and
water. Cook In double boiler until
thick. Stir lth fork. Add butter,
extracts and find. Cool. Pour Into
crust. Serve plain or with whipped

Wild Region Tapped
North Umpqua road, Ump
qua national forest. This is the
favorite road of John C. Kuhns,
director of public relations for
the forest service. It twists up
the North Umpqua river to Dia
mond lake, and begins about 24
miles northeast of Roseburg.
Only recently improved, this
road goes through the Lookout
mountain region. Fishing, hunt
ing, camping, hiking and moun
tain climbing are all within a
short distance of where the
tourist may park his car.
Brookings road, Siskiyou na

ings, in Oregon's extreme south
west corner, this road rises
steep and twisting to the heights
which overlook the ocean. Mag
nificent panoramas may be seen
of Mthe steep hills and stern
capes which feature the Curry
county seacoast. The road twists
along the Chetco river, and af
fords ocean glimpses as far
south as California.

State College, Pa. (U.R) The
department of economics at
Pennsylvania State College is
offering a new curriculum in
hotel administration, it has been
announced here. The first class
in the study will be graduated
in June.

All fish screens on the Med
ford Irrigation district's system
re in good working order, it
was stated yesterday by P. O.
Coy, superintendent of screens
and fishways for the Oregon
State Game commission follow
ing a checkup in company with
Ed Judd, superintendent of the
Medford Irrigation district. In
the past few days quite a num
ber of fish were in irrigation
ditches west of town.
Mr. Coy explained that In the
wintertime, when the tributaries
run full of water, mature fish
run up the tributaries that are
crossed by canals and spawn
their eggs. These eggs hatch
and the fingerlings stay in the
streams until the weather
warms up in the spring, and
then start back to salt water,
Mr. Coy said.
"By this time," he said, "the
Irrigation company has its spill
ways closed and thousands of
these small fish are picked up.
However, this fall these tribu
taries will be racked off so as
to keep the mature fish from
going above the spillways to
spawn, and this waste will
stop.
Incomplete returns yesterday
showed that more than 4,000
persons registered throughout
the county last Thursday for
civilian defense, it was announc
ed by Frank Hull, coordinator
of the Jackson County Council
of defense which sponsored the
voluntary registration.
Fifteen precincts were "till to
report, Mr. Hull said. He stated
that between 700 and 800 pers
ons in Medford and Ashland
filled out the separate form
showing a willingness to assist
in recreational planning.
Classification of the returns
will be started tomorrow. Mr.
Hull said. Meantime registra
tion is being continued at the
Jackson County Chamber of
l-ommerce.
