Seattle, July 10. VP) The
nation! defense requirements
will probably take close to a
billion feet of west coast lumber
this year.
The West Coast Lumbermen's
Association, reporting June bus
iness today, said the estimate
was based on the first six
months' orders and expected or
ders the rest of the year.
'This demand is particularly
strong on high grades and large
sizes that cannot be produced
elsewhere In the United States,"
the association said. "It bears on
such items as piling and timbers
for shipyard construction, plank
ing, decking and keel timbers
for wooden ships, high-grade
boxcar material, and the maxi
mum amount of lumber adapted
to airplane construction."
Near Capacity
With the recent ending of the
International Woodworkers of
America strike, the association
said, the industry Is again oper
ating near full capacity. The
withdrawal of lntercoastal ship
ping from normal trade lanes
was described as the "most crit
ical" development.
Weekly production in June
averaged 157,920,000 board feet,
or 89.1 per cent of estimated
capacity, compared with the
May average of 153,167,000 feet.
June weekly orders and ship
ments were 179,256,000 and 172,
584,000 feet, respectively. The
comparable May figures were
183,965,000 and 171,583,000
feet.
The year's production (26
weeks) has been 4,224,342,000
feet, compared with 3,482,067,
000 feet in 1940 and 3,056,652,
000 feet in 1939. The industry's
unfilled order file stood at 813,
888,000 feet at the end of June,
with gross stocks of 838,172,000
feet.

to explain his "mass punish
ment" of 350 soldiers of the
35th division for whistling and
calling to shorts-clad girls on a
Memphis, Term., golf course last
Sunday.
Kilday, house military com

introducing a resolution to in
vestigate Lear's "severe punish
ment" of the soldiers who were
ordered by the general to repeat
their trek, partly on foot, from
Memphis to Camp Robinson,
Ark., 150 miles away.

An official statement quoted

that the dummy guns were put
into emplacements while they
entrained.

The Southern Oregon Restau
rant association, composed of
cafe owners in Medford, Ashland
and Grants Pass, today an
nounced that at its regular
monthly meeting in the Hotel
Medford, June 30, the following
resolution was adopted in mem
ory of the late Jimmy Valentine,
who for years operated restau
rants here:
"Whereas, Jimmy Valentine
has, for many years, been a
prominent and progressive res
taurant operator in Jackson
county, and has shown his faith
in the future of the Rogue River
valley by his establishment and
operation of a high class restau
rant, and.
"Whereas he has always been
active in his support of all com
munity activities, both by his
personal efforts and financially,
and,
"Whereas his passing is a dis
tinct loss to the community and
the restaurant business.
"Now, therefore, be it resolved
by the Southern Oregon Restau
rant association, in regular ses
sion met, that this resolution be
adopted in memory of his pass
ing and as a token of its respect
for him.
"Be it further resolved that a
copy of this resolution be mailed
to Mrs. Erma Valentine, his
widow, at Trail, Oregon, that a
copy be handed to the Medford
Mail Tribune for publication, and
a copy be filed in the records of
the association.

ing of the members of the South
ern Oregon Restaurant associa
tion held at the Medford Hotel
on June 30, 1941.

R. T. Magleby and Newell S.
Wight, from the Portland office
of the farm security administra
tion, conferred here Wednesday
with Capt. Theron W. Bean,
constructing quartermaster for
the proposed army cantonment,
Frank J. Van Dyke, civilian co
ordinator, and others regarding
camp problems affecting the
rural population.
Capt. Bean said there were
140 to 150 families In the
Beagle-Antelope and building
center areas of the camp site. It
is the aim of the farm adminis
tration, it was explained, to see
that there is no disruption of the
agricultural pursuits of families
moved from cantonment areas
The Portland men also discussed
the erection of temporary mov'
able dwellings for cantonment
workers. They were said also to
be Interested in temporary hous
ing for migrant agricultural
workers.
Mr. Magleby is assistant re
gional director in charge of re
location projects for the farm se
curity administration and Mr,
Wight is his assistant.

problems that would be created
with construction of the camp.

cluded a series of lectures at
Hilltop Sanctuary, located on
the John Gammill ranch near
Medford.
It was the sixth annual con
clave of the Christward Ministry
to be held here. Local people
responded enthusiastically and
were awarded the conclave next
year.
During the past year a con
siderable acreage was acquired
near Oceanside, Cat., as head
quarters for study and teacher
training. Buildings are now

Henderson Letter
Washington, July 10.-
President Roosevelt has accept
ed the resignation of Leon Hen
derson as a member of the
securities commission so that
Henderson can devote all of his
attention to his new Job of price
administrator under the office
of production management.
The White House said today
that the resignation became ef
fective yesterday.
