and William Charles Strang, son

of this city, were married in Las
Vegas, Nev., yesterday at 12:15
p. m. in the First Methodist
church.
The bride has been making
her home with Col. and Mrs. L.
E. Walther of Los Angeles, Cal.,
since last May. Mr. Strang has
been in southern California- for
the past 18 months and is an
employe of the Douglas Aircraft
Corp.
Both are well-known In Med
ford where they graduated from
Medford high school. Mr. Strang
was formerly employed on the
Mail Tribune. After a brief wed
ding trip to Boulder Dam they
will make their home at 1218
12th street, Santa Monica, Cal.

Convention Report
At a meeting of the Adult
Missionary society of the First
Christian church held last week
In the church recreational hall
Mrs. Julia Gregory reported on
the state convention held recent
ly at Turner, Ore. She stressed
the point that it was the out
standing convention attended by
her to date and that enrollment
was especially high.
The topic, "Democracy a Way
of Life" was the afternoon sub
ject with a panel discussion be
ing held. Taking part were Mrs.
Eunice Smith, Mrs. Anna Ford.
Mrs. Bertha Huson, Mrs. Maude
Arnold and Mrs. Ruth Hood.
Mrs. Edna Kindred and group
received the book award for the
quarter. Devotions were in
charge of Mrs. E. P. Ireland on
the subject, "The Religious Her
itage of Democracy." Program
chairman was Mrs. Ethel Trox
ell who closed the program by
reading an essay written by a
Seattle, Wash., high school boy
entitled "Democracy and
People."
Mrs. Ralph Cook with Mrs.
Hugh Scovell as assistant served
refreshments to 44 members and
guests.

Gilstrap Home
Popular members of southern
Oregon's younger social set, Mr.
and Mrs. Willard Eberhart are
visitors here, guests at the home
of Mrs. Eberhart's parents,. Mr.
and Mrs. Ernest R. Gilstrap of
39 Geneva street.
On a five weeks' vacation, Mr.
and Mrs. Eberhart will remain
here for some time, a number of
side trips from Medford having
been planned. Included also in
their plans is a visit at the home
of Mr. Eberhart's brother, Jean
F. Eberhart of Ashland. In the
latter part of the month the
visitors will attend the pageant
In Eugene.
Mr. Eberhart, former news
editor of the Ashland Daily Tid
ings, has been associated with
the United Press for several
years and is now employed at
-its Seattle bureau. '
Group Holds
Homecoming
Homecoming was observed by
the Women's Society of Chris
tian Service of the First Meth
odist church recently. The meet
ing was conducted by the vice
president, Mrs. J. C. Tucker.
The devotions were on the topic,
"Stewards of the Temple of
God."
Reports of committees were
heard and Mrs. Tucker was
elected a member of the plan
ning board. Janette Trill sang
two selections. The lesson topic
was led by Mrs. E. G. Rosebor
ough on the subject "Alcohol
and Narcotics", assisted by sev
eral ladies from the group.

At Hedges Home
Visiting at the home of Dr.
and Mrs. A. R. Hedges over
the holiday week-end was Pri
vate William D. Lucke of the
Columbia air base in Portland
where he has been stationed
since his graduation from Wil
lamette university this year.
The betrothal of Miss Ruth
Hedges, daughter of Dr. and
Mrs. Hedges, to Private Lucke
was made known on the Wil
lamette university campus early
this year. Both were members
of the 1941 graduating class.
Mistletoe Club
Meeting Postponed
The meeting of the Mistletoe
club schceduled for Wednesday
has been postponed until further
notice, club members announced
today.

Colvigs Visit
Relatives Her
Mr. and Mrs. Fred Colvlg of
Portland arrived here by motor
this morning to spend the day
visiting relatives. Enroute south
they stopped at Crater and Dia
mond Lakes for motorlogues for
the AAA. During his stay in
Medford Mr. Colvig will also
gather information on the pro
posed cantonment. Mr. Colvlg,
a former Medford resident is
assistant editor of the Sunday
Oregonian.

CITY, FOREST FIRES
A small grass fire In town and
a small blaze in the Rogue River
national forest.
That was the sum total of
fires here over the long three
day Fourth of July holiday. The
city fire department had a gen
eral alarm Saturday but there
was no blaze, only paper kick
ing up a thick smoke in the fur
nace of the Holly theater build
ing. The grass fire occurred in the
field along Bear creek south of
East Jackson boulevard yester
day afternoon. Firemen said
they did not know what started
it.
The fire In the forest occurred
a mile below Peck's pasture Just
over the California border. It
was discovered and suppressed
yesterday morning by William
Ziegler, a guard. It was blamed
on a careless smoker. The state
forest patrol had a clean slate
no fires of any kind.
It was the first time since he
has been chief that the city de
partment did not have a call on
Fourth of July, Roy Elliott said
his-records showed.
All agencies thanked the
public for Its cooperation over a
notoriously hazardous period.

from Medford and vicinity left
here Saturday to report for work
this morning at the Boeing Air
craft company in Seattle, and
17 other aviation sheet metal
class enrollees are awaiting
calls to positions with the Lockheed-Vega
Aircraft company in
Burbank, Calif., City School Su
perintendent E. H. Hedrick an
nounced today.
The 10 boys obtaining em
ployment' with Boeing in the
stepped-up national defense pro
gram attended the local aviation
sheet metal classes for a period
of from five to ten weeks, Hed
rick explained, and were suc
cessful in passing the examina
tions given by the aircraft com
pany. The youths will receive
62V4 cents an hour minimum,
time and a half and double time
for overtime, and five cents ad
ditional per hour for work on
Sundays, he said.

The classes in aviation sheet
metal work are being held in
the senior high school under
expert instructors, and are spon
sored by the government and
the state board for vocational
education. They are free to all
boys between 18 and 25 who
can pass the requirements. Fur

BROTHER KILLED
A. C. Pease. 31, of Boise,
odaho, was killed near Nampa,
Idaho, late yesterday in the
crash of a private plane he pre
sumably was piloting, his sister,
Mrs. Howard K. . Matthews.
whose husband operates the
Arista fur store at 105 East Main
street, was notified today.
Mr. and Mrs. Matthews left
for Boise this morning to make
funeral arrangements. Their
store will be closed for several
days, probably the rest of the
week. Mr. Matthews said. Mr.
and Mrs. Matthews were accom
panied by their children Donna
and Dwight.
No details of the fatal acci
dent were received here. Mr.
Pease was in the fur business in
Boise. Until he came here in
1936 and opened the Arista
store, Mr. Matthews was associ
ated in the fur business with Mr.
Pease.
Caddies in Demand

Miss Hope Elizabeth Haupt of
Washington, D. C, lecturer on
Indian affairs, addressed three
religious groups In Medford yes
terday discussing Indian life and
the menace of the marihuana
weed.
During her stay here Miss
Haupt related Indian legends at
the Presbyterian church Bible
school yesterday morning and
sang hymns in the Sioux Indian
tongue. She was a speaker at the
vesper service in the city park
at 5 p. m. on "Up To Date Facts
on Redmen's Land." She paid
tribute to John Collier, U. S.
Indian commissioner, as out
standing worker for the Indians
and said that the Indian race has
gained considerably in popula
tion since the last census. She
also warned of the menace of
marihuana to young America.
At the Young People's society
meeting at the First Christian
church she described a wedding
among the Navajos where the
Indian maiden still selects her
husband. She addressed mem
bers of the Seventh Day Avent
ist church Saturday evening.
Miss Haupt left this afternoon
for Grants Pass.
During her stay here Miss
Haupt climbed Table Rock and
reports that the trip took her 11
hours because she lost the trail.
In addition to her inter-denominational
church work in
the Indian field Miss Haupt said
she worked for 23 years in close
collaboration with Mr. Collier as
an independent investigator,
She also has written a book
dealing with her work among
the Indians and has been adopt
ed into numerous tribes, she
said.

production has started at the
plant of the White Motor com
pany here on "half trac" arm
ored scout cars.
On the first day of mass pro
duction 17 cars rolled off the
assembly lines and the rate will
be increased . to 35 cars a day or
700 a month.
"Half-tracs" will be manufac
tured to equip mechanized divi
sions of the country's expanding
