tant as an aid to fighting forest
fires if a portable tent darkroom
under experimentation here
proves its worth.
The portable darkroom makes
it possible for fire fighters in the
field to determine the exact lo
cation and severity of mountain
blazes In a few minutes time,
according to the men who origin
ated It. They are Frank Scovel,
fire prevention engineer for the
county state fire department,
and Harold Bowhay, county fire
warden.
Negatives by 'Chute
A fire may be photographed
from an airplane, the undevel
oped negatives dropped by para
chute to ground crews. The films
are develODed in the small tent
darkroom right on the line of;
usuie.
Scovel estimated that with the
portable equipment the chief of
a fire crew can have a completed
print of a forest fire within sev
en minutes after the airplane
cameraman snaps the shutter.
The Information that can be
gleaned from such a photograph
is extremely valuable in plan
ning suppression activities and
selecting the point of attack, ac
cording to Bowhay.
Portable Generator
The films are contained In a
sealed tube during their down
ward flight. Once on the ground,
the tube is opened by the crew
boss in the darkroom and the
film removed and developed.
Prints are made with an electric
light, the power being supplied
by a portable generator.
From the photographs, the
ground crews obtain information
as to the terrain, the character
and trend of the fire and its
exact location In mountainous
areas.
Immediately after a fire Is re
ported, a forest service plane
takes off to scout the terrain.
Meanwhile, fire fighting crews
move up by road and establish
a base near the blaze. There the
films are received and deve

The work, scheduled to be
published before 1949 In five
volumes under the title of "Mid
dle English Dictionary," reveals
the changing definitions of
words, derivations of names, and
spelling variations unmatched

For Instance, according to
Prof. Thomas A. Knott, editor
of the dictionary, the word
"nice" in 1290 meant foolish or
stupid. In MIS it meant atranv

did It get Its present meaning.
