A usualy well-informed mem
ber of congress said today that
President Roosevelt probably
would settle next week a con
troversy between administration
officials and leaders on capitol
hill over the question of enact
ing price-fixing legislation.
This informant said that Leo
Henderson, chief of the govern
ment's crice fixing set-up. was
urging Mr. Roosevelt to reconv
mend mandatory price-fixing to
congress promptly. Henderson
recently said "the honeymoon
is over" so far as voluntary gov
ernment-industry cooperation to
4 fix prices was concerned.
At the capitol, it was reported
that some white House lieuten
ants wanted the president to de
lay any recommendation for
price fixing. They believed, it
was said, that the legislation
would stir up a long senate con
troversy and prevent a projec
ted rest period for the chamber
while the house is working on
the new tax bill.
To Confer Mendar
The question of whether the
legislation will be sought im
mediately may be threshed out
w at a conference between the
president and his congressional
leaders Monday.
Senator Hill (D-Ala). the act

ers that any price measure un
doubtedly "will be pretty thor
oughly gone into, but in the fin-

ably would take favorable ac
tion.
"It is a very far-reaching and
complicated question. Hill add
ed, "and I have heard nothing
to indicate that it would be
brought up at once."
Oppose Free Hand
Senate Republicans were re
ported by one of their number
to be almost solidly opposed to
granting the administration
free hand to fix prices, and a
bloc of farm-state legislators al
ready is at work to block any
such proposal.
The farm group, led by Chair
man Smith ID-SC), of the sen
ate agriculture committee, adop
ted a resolution this week stat
ing that government efforts at
price fixing should be delayed
"until a definite policy has been
adopted by congress."

Millions of men and women
have heard of Shangri-La. They
have seen it in the movies, read
about it in a novel which went
into 18 printings and they have
visioned it in their dreams and
fantasies. Shangri-La is the
mythical aurora-like sanctuary
in the mountains of Tibet con
ceived by James Hilton in his
famous book "Lost Horizon."
Each individual has iiis own
estimate of Shangri-La. But
what is James Hilton's esti
mate? In the opinion of the
author of Shangri-La, the most
striking actual counterpart of
that idyllic retreat is in the up
lands along the Oregon-California
border.
Hilton's geographical descrip
tion is not much more specific
than that, except that the place
is somewhere between Mount
Shasta's white dome and the
Medford airport.
Just Where la Itt
Exactly where is this Ameri
can version of Shangri-La? Is
It Colestine, Oregon, or Horn
brook, California, or any of a
score of other hamlets and vil
lages which dot the forests of
that region?

This Is Hollywood's conception of Shangri-La, a cluster of
airy pavilions perched in grim Himalaya mountains of Asia.
Not even James Hilton is pre
cisely sure where it is. He only
is sure that somewhere, some
place, in the neighborhood of
the Rogue river ana bnasia
national forests sleeps the quiet
little western town, which re
calls to him the legendary clus
ter of pavilions and dwellings
he created in "Lost Horizon."
How did it all start? A few
weeks ago the noted author
flew north from Culver City,
California, where he is writing
movies, to speak before the In
land Empire Education associa
tion at Spokane. As his United
Air Line plane passed north
west of Mount Shasta Hilton
was looking out the window at
the rugged country far below.
Nestled in the tree-carpeted
foothills he saw a village, a
group of houses clustered
around a clearing like straw
berries on a shortcake.
Plane Beyond Shasta
The plane was somewhat be
yond Mount Shasta's glacier-
barricaded ramparts when he
first spied the place. Huge
motors thrumming, the ship
was soon past the village. Hil
ton watched with fascinated at
tention until the group of wood
en buildings was swallowed by
the green mantle of fir and
pine. Even after the place had
vanished from sight he con
tinued to search for it in the
sprawling countryside behind
the plane. Finally he settled
I back in a reverie and thought
: over what he had seen.

found real "Shangri-La" in i kane, he said that the nearest
mountains of southern Oregon approach to Shangri-La of
which he knew was "a little
town, up in the Oregon or Cal
ifornia mountains, that I flew
over a couple of days ago. Mil
lions of people in Europe would
think that town was Heaven.
The village was on the right
of our plane, very close to the
border between California and
Oregon."
Retreat From Chaos
As ha looked from the air
plane that Sunday morning a
few weeks ago James Hilton
unquestionably did not see
Shangri-La as conceived by the
lavish designers of Hollywood.
Nor did he glimpse his own
airy pavilions clinging to the
grim face of the Himalayas.
What he sighted was the al
legorical Shangri-La, the sym
bolic retreat, the place quiet
and apart from the bombs and
chaos and turmoil of a world
In crisis. Where is that place,
a place which connotes to the
author of "Lost Horiron"
mythical village familiar to
millions?
Hilton insists he will make
every effort to revisit the area.
Perhaps he can combine air and
land transportation in his hunt.
He can fly over the terrain,
looking for hamlets which are
potential Shangri-Las, and then
he can inspect the places more
closely by cur. In the mean
while, at any rate, the search
is open to everyone and not
alone the author of "Lost Hori
zon." To fishing, camping,
hunting, driving and other at
tractions of southern Oregon
and northern California now
is added another Shangri-La.

Julius Otto, 54, attached
to the German consulate gen
eral in New York before it was

U. S. government, hanged him
self with a sash cord in the

a number of southern Oregon
residents in the early hours

"It gave me the. biggest thrill
I've ever had and it showed how
puny man's efforts are when
comnared with nature's." said
Mrs. Dave Gould of 223 West
Jackson boulevard who first
saw the "northern lights" from
a boat on Lake O' Woods a short
time after midnight Friday.
Max C. Henne, manager of
United Air Lines here, said that
the company's radio communi
cation had been "fading or
skipping" the past couple of
days, a condition usually no
ticed whenever the aurora bo
realis appears.
MONTANA WILL LOSE
SEVEN CCC CAMPS
Mr. and Mrs. Gould were
boating with Miss Maude Ab
bott, and Eldred W. Corley, of
Medford, when they saw the
lights about 12:30 a. m. yester
day. At first there were Just
beams of white light but as the
morning wore on the rays took
on color, red, violet, green and
other vivid hues, Mrs. Gould
related. Driving home, Mr.
Gould awakened his three
young children, Norman, Don
ald and Jerry, so that they
might see the spectacular light.
The illumination remained visi
ble to them until about 3 a. m.,
Mrs. Gould related.
Mr. and Mrs. Wilbef Stevens
of Route 4, Box 106, also re
ported seeing the lights shortly
after they had returned home
from a trip to Lakeview. Mrs.
Stevens said she had seen the
aurora borealis before but this
was the first time she noticed
the light in the form of curtains
as background for the colored
illumination in front.
The light filled quarter of
the heavens and extended slight1
ly east of the municipal airport
and around Roxy Ann, Mrs.
Stevens stated.

the relaxing atmosphere of his
Hyde Park home. President
Roosevelt returned today to
Washington and an immediate
checkup on the situation of the
nation's defenses.
A few minutes after his ar
rival, he was closeted with his
immediate advisors on defense
production and foreign relations.
Reportedly, they gave him a de
tailed review of developments
which he had followed closely
but in general outline while he
was gone.
Welles Reports
Among his conferees were
Sumner Welles, the acting sec
retary of state, who gave him a
report on foreign a'fairs, includ
ing the expulsion of American
consuls from nazi-dominated
Denmark; and General George
C. Marshall, the army chief of
staff, who. on Thursday urged
that restrictions be relaxed to
permit the army to send draftees
outside the Western Hemisphere.
They and Henry L. Stimson,
the secretary of war, James V.
Forrestal, the acting secretary
of the navy and Rear Admiral
Royal E. Ingersoll, assistant
chief of naval operations, con-
suited with the chief executive
for more than two hours.
Meanwhile, developments re
lated to the defense and foreign
situations included:
An announcement that Wil
liam S. Knudsen, director of the
office of production manage
ment was planning a tour of in
spection of the nation's princi
pal aircraft, ship and ordnance
production centers. The trip will
begin on Monday in the Detroit
area.
11 Marines Safe
The navy received word that
11 marines en route to Lon-
don who became castaways
when their ship was torpedoed
had been picked up and were
safe. After the incident, three
were missing. The eight others
previously had been reported
rescued.
Secretary of Commerce Jones
disclosed that usual regulations
had been suspended to permit
tankers plying the eastern coast
to carry heavier loads of oil and
in that way offset, in part, the
eastern oil shortage.
In addition, the war depart
ment took cognizance of the high
cost of living In Washington,
crowded now with service men
and government workers drawn
in to fill defense posts. Only
army lieutenants who are single
or have independent financial
means will be ordered to Wash
ington in the future.
