Gen. Sir Claude Auchinleck
Transferred From India to
Middle East in Surprise
London, July 2 (JP) Gen.
Sir Archibald P.Wvell luddenly
was transferred today from the
middle east to India, and sur
prised Britons speculated on the
possibility that the government
toresaw a quick German victory
over Soviet Russia and a subse
quent Nazi drive on the Ganges,
ges.
The transfer, in fact, was a
switch of commands. Gen. Sir
Claude Auchinleck, 57-year-old
Scot, moving from India to the
middle east.
Sir Claude, about whom the
British public knows little, has
served in Egypt, Aden, Iraq
Kurdistan and India. He was
named commander-in-chief of
India last January 27 after dis
tinguishing himself by directing
the British attack on Narvik,
Norway, and organizing English
coastal defenses.
Explanation Refused
At the same time the appoint
ment of Capt. Oliver Lyttleton
as minister of state and mem
ber of the war cabinet to repre
sent the cabinet in the middle
east was announced.
Prime Minister Winston
Churchill today refused to make
a statement in the house of com
mons which might explain the
reason for the change. Denying
a request for such a satement
by Leslie Hore-Belisha, former
war minister, Churchill said: "I
do not see any advantage in
adding to information already
given at the present time."
Wavell was the target for con
siderable Australian criticism
after the Greek campaign and
from Australian sources in Lon
don today it was learned that
the resentment of Prime Minis
ter Robert G. Menzies was an
important contributory factor to
Wavells shift.

Work Goes On Reconstruc
tion work at CCC headquarters
at Sixth and Front streets is
continuing. The painters and
plasterers have completed work
in the main office but have yet
to do the offices of the inspec
tor and welfare officer. Lino
leum is being laid in the Welfare
office and this work will be com
pleted today. All construction
work will be done by the end
of next week, including the in
stallation of two new fluores
cent lamps in the welfare and
educational offices, headquar
ters said.

the forenoon plane and Mr. and
Mrs. G. R. Bates left for Los
Angeles. R. G. Hoffman arrived
from Portland on the midnight

B. Conaway, to Portland. Mrs.
V. D. Brophy and P. Hawes ar
rived from Portland on the eve
ning plane. Departing were J. I
Gallagher, to Oakland, Cal., and
H. M. Bemrod, to San Francisco.
Miss E. Buckles left for Portland
on the afternoon plane.
HALF YEARWlDEND
PAID BY 1ST FEDERAL
A dividend at the rate of
per cent was credited yesterday
on ine records of savings-ac
count patrons of the First Fed
eral Savings Sc Loan association
of Medford. The dividend was
for the six months ending June
30.
The dividend was declared at
the regular board meeting June
17. In voting the dividend, the
directors continued the rate ap
proved in the past several periods.

Dally service for persons
seeking renewal of their oper
ators' licenses will be continued
until further notice in council
chambers on the top floor of
city hall, it was announced to
day by Ward McReynolds, super
visor of the southern Oregon
district, for the state motor ve
hicle division. Driver examina
tions will also be held daily
excepting Fridays.
The whole office will be clos
ed this Friday for Fourth of
July.
All operators' licenses expired
June 30 and must be renewed
for the next two-year period.
Mr. McReynolds reminded the
public. On June 30 the office
here handled 1133 renewals and
driver examinations, he an
nounced. Last Saturday the to
tal was 820 and the average for
the week ending June 28 was
576 daily, he said.

day $303,004 to the counties as
the state's 1941 school appor
tionment, the money being the
board's profits. The 1940 ap
portionment was $304,361.
The apportionment amounts
to $1.14 for each of the state's
265.793 children of school age.
The average last year was $1.15.
The 1941 apportionment by
counties includes: Coos $9,246.
Curry $1,380. Douglas $7,486,
Jackson $10,912, Josephine $4,
579. Klamath $13,182, Lake
$1,736.

panies (local men) on its list of
camps after July 7.
Dies Dave Atkinson, well
known insurance man, died sud
denly in Portland yesterday,
friends here were notified to
day. Mr. Atkinson, known affec
tionately as "Big Dave." was su
perintendent of agencies of the
Phil Grossmayer company, gen
eral agents, Portland, and ser
viced the southern Oregon terri
tory for 28 years. He had many
friends In this section of the
state.
