Shortage of Ships Stalls

Washington, D. C (U.PJ The mounting gravity of tha world
shipping shortage, already responsible for sharp curtailment
of Latin America's normal trad with Europe, is causing deep
concern in inter-American trade circles.
Considerable shipping tonnage i
has been requisitioned by the
V. S. maritime commission for
commercial and military pur
poses, affecting shipping service
between United States ports and
the Caribbean and on both the
east and west coasts of South
America and, although some of
the vessels taken over have been
replaced with other ships, there
la no guarantee that the battle
of the Atlantic might not cause
a further depletion In ocean
carriers in western hemisphere
service.
United States maritime circles
are of the opinion that once the
expropriation of the idle bel
ligerent and neutral shipping in
American porta is completed.
It least some of these vessels
will be assigned to inter-American
traffic.

ing ships, and recent reports
from Chile indicate that the
original schedule for shipping
these materials has lagged far
behind
