DUTY IN AUGUST

All qualified members of the
enlisted reserve corps in the
ninth corps area will be called
to active duty in the army early
in August, headquarters of Ma-
or General Ernest D. Peek.
commanding general of theJ
ninth corps area, announced to
day.
The call involves those mem
bers who enlisted prior to last
June 1. The corps comprises
persons eligible for enlistment
in the regular army who have
had certain military or tech
nical training and enlisted vol
untarily for three years.
Most of them at present are
former members of the reserve
officers' training corps and the
citizens' military training corps
who did not complete the re
quirements for commissions in
the officers' reserve corps.
Members of the enlisted re
serve corps with dependents
may be discharged on applica
tion and presentation of an af
fidavit of dependency.

ted Frank C. Hiller, 30, and
Harold H. Conner, 31, of kid
naping today.
Federal Judge James A. Fee

it was the first time women ever
sat on federal court jury in
Oregon there were six of them
Hiller and . Conner were ac
cused of abducting an 18-year-
old girl in Portland and trans

here today.
Wheat tumbled four cents.

cents a bushel and lard $1 per
hundred pounds. Even with this
sharp setback, however, wheat
showed net gains of one to al
most two cents compared with a
week ago while goy beans were
more than four cents higher.

factors.

Richard Carle, the tall, thin,
grey-haired character actor with
the high-pitched, quizzical voice,
died today, but his best, friend
is carrying on for him in the
movies.
Carle. 69, suffered heart at
tack a week ago while working
in a new Deanna Durbin picture.
His partner In dozens of stage
and screen shows, Walter Cat
lett, replaced him.
Carle was prominent on the
stage for 30 years as a comedian,
playwrite and composer.
