. Thanks Paper For Aid
To the Editor:
It ii with considerable pleas
ure that I announce the success
ful completion of the recent
army recruiting campaign wnicn
Oreaon s 'To the colon t-om-
mlttee" sponsored on behalf of
the United States army recruiv
Ing service. Except for a few
miscellaneous vacancies and
some additional air corps va
cancies, the original quota as
signed to us has been filled.
The cooperation given us by
your newspaper played an Im
nortant rwrt tn the successful
conduct of this campaign. I
know that I need not remind
you of the Important responsi
bility that Is yours In molding
public opinion.
For your splendid cooperation
we wish to thank you, and I am
sure that If and when the need
shall again arise, that we can
call upon you to take part.
B. H. HENSLEY,
Lt. Colonel, Inf.,
District Recruiting Officer.
Portland, June 26, 1941.
Claims Farmers Mot Consulted
To the Editor:
We don't know If lt should
be called cantonement, contaan
ment or contoonment, but we
have about come to the con
clusion that tt Is a case ot those
that should be the most con
cerned are the least consulted.
We notice in the papers from
time to time where different
organizations, dealers, etc., are
Invited to attend certain meet
ings to receive information rela
tive to the proposed army post
but never have we seen or
heard of any effort being made
to give the property owners and
farmers that will be affected
any Information whatsoever.
We don't feel that this is
showing the proper attitude,
"For If a government can't take
its people Into Its confidence,
how can it expect confidence in
return."
From the report that are
published In the papers one
would be Inclined to believe
that the land owners that are
liable to be relieved of their
property are all for this. But
from a dozen or more contacts
that we have had with these
people we have not found one
that favors It. Especially now
that it appears, from what is
being Intimated by the ap
praisers, that we are going to
be expected to turn over our
land for a price equal to about
one-half of Its assessed valua
tion. We are not entirely orthodox
but we do believe that "God
helps them that help them
selves." and we don't believe It
nythtng but wise and proper

to organize and engage a cap
able attorney that they might
present their side of the ques
tion properly.
For after all the constitution
plainly reads that no man's
property may be taken from
him without due process of
law.
On the other hand. If we arc
going to sit back and let the
Msdford Chamber of Commerce
do our bargaining for us, we
may lose our shirts and pos
sibly our panta too, which
would be embarrassing to say
the least.
