but it does run
into money
IT MUST GIVE the shades
of Black Bart and Joaquin
Murietta the galloping de
spondencies to see the way their
rough, pioneer work has been
improved upon these days. They
thought they levied stalwart
assessments on those who trav
eled the highways. Yet they
only scutched the surface.
If all the money taken In by
toad-agents were laid end to
end, tt wouldn't cover one
week's gas-tax bill pungled
in pennies by America's motor
ists. Last year the total take
exceeded 12 hundred million
.dollars.
But, whereas the victims of
the mask and six gun tribe used
to call lustily for the sheriff,
the motorists have never com
plained not really. Instead,
their attitude has combined that
of the good sport and good
citizen. So it would be nice
in these days of properly in
creasing taxes it everybody
could appreciate how heavy the
gas-tax burden has become.
But how can anybody con
ceive of 12 hundred million
dollars? One dollar is more
down one's alley, isn't it? Take
one dollar, then another, until
you've used every silver dollar
in the country. They will pay
about one-half this annual gas
tax bill leaving the rest on
the cuff until Saturday night.
