MEDFORD MAIL TRIBUNE. MEDFORD. OREGON, FRIDAY, JUNE 6, 1941.
KING CITY AFTER
PAY DISTRIBUTED
Two Million Dollars Given
Men of 41st and 3rd Di
visions; Enjoy Maneuvers
Br Paul W. Hugh
King City, Cal., June 3.
(Spl) A $2,000,000 payroll was
distributed to troops of the
41st and 3rd divisions in this
area last week-end. The money
was drawn from the vaults of
the Bank of America here by
pay of fleets from the many
units of the two divisions and
special troops Saturday morning
and all men were paid before
sundown of the same day.
Soldiers filled the town far
beyond capacity and this com
munity has not recovered from
the deluge of soldiers yet.
Besides the usual forms of
recreation the soldiers found a
recreational hall called the
Army Hayloft installed and
ready for their use.
The Army Hayloft is on the
same order of the service men's
clubs in Tacoma and Olympla
and has a restaurant, bowling
alley, shooting gallery, reading
and writing room.
This week the troops are en
gaged in their first actual man
euvers. The first maneuvers will
last only three days and the
following two weeks will be
taken up with basic training in
the field.
In moving such a large vol
ume of troops into one area
there are many obstacles to be
overcome and the men find that
they are living somewhat of a
primitive life. All the men seem
to enjoy all of this despite the
minor hardships they have to
go through with.
HIGHWAY AIRFIELDS
RECOMMENDED FOR
MASS PLANE MOVES
Washington, June 6. (IP) A
t20.000.000 cross-roads widen
ing program to provide 400
"satellite airdromes" for mass
movements of military aircraft
was recommended to congress
today by Gen. George H. Brett,
army air corps chief.
The recommendation was
made to the house roads com
mittee at hearings on President
Roosevelt's request for a $123,
000,000 military road program.
These airfields, as outlined by
Brett, would be provided by
widening concrete highways at
crossroads to 250 feet and pro
viding there a 300-foot parallel
ling graded and grassed strip.
The widened highway and the
strip would run from 3,000 to
8,000 feet.
By building the auxiliary
fields at cross-roads, planes
could land In any one of four
wind directions, Brett said.
