THE GRANGE
Central Point Grange
Central Point grange will meet
Friday evening with the worthy
chaplain, assisted by the lec
turer, presenting a program fof
those whose birthdayi fall in
this quarter.
An outstanding feature of the
program is to be the beautifully
decorated birthday table. Its
n.ain motif, honoring National
Flag day, has been artfully
worked out by Clara Vincent,
with Grandma Vincent faithfully
supplying the dainty and essen
tial needlework. The lecture
hour also honors the flag. Start
ing with the making of the first
American flag ever to be fired
upon, and going through stveral
interesting features of its his
tory down to the panorama of
the present day "Makers of the
Flag."
Some expected to take part In
the program are Eula Foley, Eva
Smith, Charity Sanders. Frcida
Smith, Mrs. Tracy and the six
little colonial dnmcs who amused
everyone in their previous ap
pearance on Washington's birth
day program. The men of the
grange, "losers as usual,' will
furnish the eats, wash the dishes,
etc.
Williams Grange
Roy Patterson, chairman of
the agricultural committee, re
ported on the results of the
squirrel poisoning campaign at
the regular meeting of Wil
liams Grange.
He estimated 4.500 acres on
the east and west forks of Wil
liams creek had been covered.
A report was also given by
the committee which visited
Missouri Flat in an effort to
secure a bridge across the Ap
plegate at the county line op
posite Provolt store.
Roller skating parties are
held at the Grange hall every
Friday evening, also Sundays,
from 2 to 4:30 under manage
ment of Mr. and Mrs. Livy
Murphy.- The social meeting of
June 3 will serve Ice cream and
pie, each family bringing pic
pr cake and materials for the
ice cream.
A. D. Gray was appointed to
fill the lecturer's place at times

late Samuel Mathla for the ladlea of
the Civic Improvement Club to use
aa a library. Mrs. Wilson returned
with the ladlea and visited several
daya at the &andry homa.

An increase in milk prices was
inaugurated here June 1, made
necessary, it was claimed, by
Increased costs of production.
Milk previously selling at 11
cents per quart took a one-cent
Jump, as did 12-cent milk (five
per cent), which rose to 13
cents. Cream selling In half
pints for 18 cents rose to 20
cents, pints from 33 to 38 cents,
and quarts from 65 to 70 cents.
In the wholesale field, there
was no increase In half-pints
and pints of milk which sold
for three and six cents, respec
tively, but nine-cent quarts rose
to 10, and gallons which sold
at 36 cents, Jumped up to 40.
A four-cent jump was also no
ticed In retail prices of milk by
the gallon, going up from 44 to
48 cents.

The federal debt soared above
$48,000,000,000 today, after a
jump of $1,100,000,000 In the
last 30 days.
About $300,000,000 of the rise
was due to sales of defense
savings bonds, but the debt
went to $48,393,333,938 today
after the treasury recorded Its
$600,000,000 sales of regular
styles of bonds to banks last
week.
Growth of the defense pro
gram which has cost $5,279.
603,723 since last July 21 has
caused extensive borrowing by
the treasury. Today's debt fig
ure was $5,426,002,800 larger
than It was when the fiscal yaar
began last July 2.

FATAL CRUSH CAUSED
Astoria, Ore., June 5. (IP)
A three-truck collision on a
smoky highway yesterday killed
Alvln M. Kelly, 35, Tacoma log
truck driver, and injured an
other man.
John Dawson, driving one of
the trucks, told police he slow
ed down after encountering a
dense imoke pall on the high
way north of Seaside. Tha
smoke came from a roadside
fire.
Kelly, driving the following
truck, crashed into the rear of
Dawson's - machine and a log,
rammed forward by the Impact,
crushed him to death.
Guy French, driving a third
truck, struck the wreckage and
suffered serious burns on one
leg in tha resulting fire.
