Holds Homecoming
At Methodist Parlor
Members of the W.S.C.S. of
the First Methodist church en
joyed homecoming Tuesday af
ternoon at 2 o'clock in the
church parlors. An interesting
program under direction of Miss
May Phipps was presented fol
lowed by a social hour arranged
by members of the Queen Esther
circle.
Mrs. W. W. Walker called the
meeting to order; Mrs. Martha
Hill led devotions. Mrs. Hill
sang an old-time Wesleyan hymn
especially arranged with another
' hymn as the chorus.
A temperance reading was
given by Jim Tucker, after
which 17 members of the "Sing
ing Grandmothers," led by Effie
Herbert Kurtz sang, accompan
ied at the piano by Mrs. Mar
guerite Conrad.
The study, "Investing Our Her
itage," was led by Miss Phipps
with several members of the so
ciety assisting. The ladies told
of various phases of the work
as conducted by the W.S.C.S.
Preceding the homecoming,
members of the society's execu
tive board met in the ladies'
parlor for luncheon and business
session. The month' business
consisted mainly of preparing
reports and finances of various
organizations for conference re
ports. : Party Celebrates
Seventh Birthday
Michael Clark, young son of
Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Clark, was
honored Thursday afternoon
when a group of young friends
called at the home of his par
ents in Perrydale to celebrate
his seventh birthday anniver
sary. Games and contests and a
dummy doll named "Suzy" en
tertained the children, after
which birthday cake was served.
Assisting Mrs. Clark were M!
chad's two grandmothers. Mrs.
R..A. Clark and Mrs. W. A.
Hooker.

Parties Held By
Sojourners Club
Members of Medford Sojourn
ers' club held seven neighbor
hood parties in various sections
of the city Thursday afternoon.
The parties were given as a
means of acquainting each mem
ber with those in her immediate
neighborhood since the club is
made up of newcomers to the
city.
At each party two or three
tables of cards were in play, or
the afternoon was spent sewing.
Due to the fact that much Inter
est was shown in the neighbor
hood partus, ii is probable that
the fifth Thursday of coroing
months will see a repetition a!
the idea.
In the south end of town Mrs.
O. R. Fritz and Mrs. William
Clegg were hostesses at the home
of Mrs. Fritz on Glen Oak Court.
Mrs. Eugene Card and Mrs.
Orrin Brown held high honors
for cards. Mrs. Howard John
son entertained at her home
on Queen Anne avenue, assisted
by Mrs. George Albright. Mrs.
Frank Humphrey and Mrs. I. E.
Staples received prizes for hon
ors at cards.
On the north side of the city
members gathered at the home
of Mrs. George Rudolph, 432
North Holly street, with Mrs.
Murray Marley and Mrs. Robert
Colburn assisting. Mrs. Doug
lass Welch and Mrs. C. Worth
Cheney received prizes. In the
west end of the city Mrs. Ernest
Howell entertained at her home,
29 Ross Court, with Mrs. Har
old Hoppe as assisting hostess
Mrs. E. S. Degman held high
honors at cards.
Three parties were held in the
south section of the city. Mr3.
Ted Homecker entertained at
her home, 1015 West 11th street,
with Mrs. Jack Evans assisting.
Mrs. Hornecker held honors for
cards. A second party was at
the home of Mrs. Emil Berg,
1003 West 11th, with Mrs. Don
McFadden assisting and Mrs.
Roy Byrd holding high honors at
cards.

ties were at the South Oakdale
home of Mrs. Merle Muncey,
with Mrs. Hugh Erickson assist
ing. Mrs. Robert Crutchfield,
Mrs. Royal Clare and Mrs. Fred
W. Rehling received prizes for
high honors, and Mrs. Crutch
field held highest score for the
seven parties.

the Sojourners, and Mrs. Doug

which made original plans for
the parties.

A surprise kitchen shower was
given in honor of Miss Eva Mae
Caldwell of Phoenix by mem
bers of the Missiionary society
and the Ladies' Aid society of
the Proenix Presbyterian church
at the Caldwell home Thursday
evening. -Games were followed
by a social hour. Miss Cald
well's marriage will be solemn

Parade Is staged In the Interest
of safer bicycle riding in this
community. Every mother and
father should welcome and en
courage any event that calls at
tention to the constant need for
careful bicycle riding. A set of
ten rules of safety are given
with each entry blank, together
with a set of colorful wheel
discs bearing the slogan, "I Ride
Safely . . Do You?" Boys and
girls are urged to register now,
obey the safety rules, use the
wheel discs, and prepare their
bikes for the big parade.

U.S. Navy Needs More Men
To the Editor
Thirty-five thousand addition
al men are urgently needed for
the U. S. navy by June thirtieth.
Selective service does not ap
ply to the navy. The navy de
pends upon voluntary enlist
ments entirely. The term of en
listment in the regular navy Is
still six years for all men over
eighteen and under thirty-one
years of age. For all men be
tween the ages of 17 and 18 the
enlistment is for minority, or
until the boy attains his twenty
first birthday.

years, the naval reserve offers
an attractive proposition. Ho
may enlist In one of the many
classes of the naval reserve and
be released from active duty
upon the termination of the
present emergency. He may en
list for certain designated duties
and if qualified will be sent to
service schools to prepare him
for these duties, and as stated
before, he will be released from
active duty when the emergency
is over.
Anytime after the recruit's
indoctrination training he may,
if he so desires, transfer to the
regular navy and the time spent
in the reserve will be computed
in the time necessary for retire
ment In other words, he obligates
himself only for the duration of
the emergency and at the same
time finds out If he Is cut out
to be a navy man. When thai is
decided he may transfer to the
regular navy.
