days in the middle west. He
was a native son, born in the
Willamette valley. His memory
for detail was marvelous. To

esting to me than reading even
a well-composed book.
Even the dumb animals rec
ognized his kindly gentleness. A
Persian cat he had given our
children always met him at the
gate when he called on us. and
sat very close to him as he rest

home to Ashland.
His patience and fortitude dur
ing his intense physical suffer

bitter pain was a spirit of grac

Beneath those sweet family

do not grieve as those who have
no hope. A well-ordered life
has ended. May he rest in peace.

Why Our Boys Are Not Prepared
To the Editor: There is a situ
ation existing In this country
today that puts the lie to our.
boast of justice and equality.
One privileged group of our
manpower refuses to prepare de
fense equipment for wages from
40 cents to one dollar an hour,
or perhaps more, while the other
part our soldiers, our marines
and navy must stand ready
(for $21 per month) to enter this
war at any time, without equip
ment. If these boys are sent into
this war before we are ready,
they will not come back. And
we are not ready.
"We. the people," have been
standing by for months watch
ing this happen, unwittingly be
traying our boys, and we are
still standing by.
We should resolve and de
mand that no son of American
soil shall enter this war until
the extent of our national de
fense is known and approved
by the American people.
If we are attacked here, and
our boys must die, they die in
self-defense and not sacrificed in
the defense of those who are not
trying to help themselves or
others. Mrs. W. Lillie.

What's th Matter With Medford?
To the Editor: I have a ques
tion will you please answer?
"What's the matter with our
town?"
I started up town this morn
ing, and it seemed that all na
ture might be smiling upon me
with the gentle rain coming
down, refreshing the air, making
one feel that our climate is un
excelled. But why, when we
have Dcrfect alrlpwnlkv Hn urn
have to borrow the street for
navigation, therefore risking our
lives by speeding cars? I found
that I had to take to the street
because our walk was obliterat
ed with weeds, and to try to pass
through meant wet feet and fox
tail clinging to our hosiery till
we feel somewhat like a porcu
pine. Our homes are endangered by
fire from weeds as high as our
heads on adjoining lots.
I see In your paper from time
to time where you request that
we clean up and beautify our
lawns and homes. I can assure
you that it does no good for
me to try, for neighboring chick
ens scratch out everything I
plant. Four years ago I set out
a row of ornamental trees near
the line of a vacant lot and the
owner set fire to the tall dry
grass, killing trees, flowers, gar
den and everything nearby. I
have been trying since to get
him to clean up the blackberry
bu.thes that have taken his en
tire back yard and have been
seven feet over on me, but I
have to do the work myself or
my place would b ruined by
them. You, perhaps, will say
why I do not report such con
ditions. I have; it did no good.
