Clerk's Office Records Show
Increase Past 3 Months
Home Demand Is Up
The number of real estate
transfer! in Jackson county,
particularly In the Medfoid
area, has been growing steadily
in recent months, it was learned
at the county clerk's office
Saturday, County Clerk George
R. Carter stated that deed re
cordings so far this month have
been at an even faster pace
than in April when 791 deeds
and mortgages were placed on
the books.
Other totals since the first of
the year include January 609,
February 631, and March 717.
While some substantial busi
ness buildings have been pur
chased such as the Halley build
ing by M. N. Hogan and the
Vawter home corner by W. H.
Fluhrer, in Medford; the Lithia
Hotel in Ashland, by C. R.
Cooley, and the Hatfield build
ing and Whiteside property, in
Central Point, by Mr. and Mrs.
George Hunt, the bulk of the
dealing has been in residential
property.
In addition to the outright
purchases, number of options
have been reported. One wom
an is said to be seeking options
on large residential properties
here and in surrounding towns,

According to C. Y. Tengwald,
president of the Medford Realty
board, the buying of homes is
undoubtedly being spurred by
the possibility that a canton
ment may be located here, but
the movement is not of specu
lative type, nor in the nature
of a boom. "It is mainly
precaution on the part of those
who have been renting to en
sure themselves against possible
rent Increases," he said.
Mr. Tengwald pointed out
that although many of the rural
transfers shown on the record
er's books relate to rights of
way for pole lines, there is also
a substantial Increase In farm
property buying. . This phase
was accentuated by the pur
chase last week of 830 acres
on Rogue river by Actress
Ginger Rogers and her mother.
While Medford has long en
Joyed a reputation as a city
of home owners, Tengwald de
clared that the estimated 70 per
cent of home ownership will be
boosted materially if the pres
ent buying movement continues
any length of time.
Because of the recently grow
ing demand for houses to rent,
Tengwald urged that those hav
ing such properties list them
with licensed real estate dealers
so that those keeking homes may
find them without having to
drive over town looking for
"for rent" signs.
To Teach in Lane Co.
Southern Oregon College of
Education, Ashland, May 24

Medford has recently been
placed in a teaching position,
according to the placement bu
reau of the Southern Oregon
College of Education. Miss Rose
will U-ach In the fir.it four grades
of the Delight Valley school in
Lane County.

BLAST
The decomposed and badly
mangled body of Vern Dollar
hide. 44, woodcutter and rancher
of the south Ashland district,
was discovered in a field about
seven miles south of Ashland
Saturday morning, and the dep
uty coroner's office of that city
said death had apparently been
caused by a dynamite blast.
Dollarhlde, according to the
deputy coroner's office "had
been pulling and blasting "tumps
for over a week at the Austie
Barron ranch. It was judged
that he had been dead since
Monday or Tuesday.
The body was discovered by
George Haines, who resides at
the Charles A. Haines ranch ap
proximately four miles south of
where Dollarhlde was working,
the deputy coroner's office
stated. Haines set out to search
for Dollarhlde when Dollar
hide's sister and mother, who
live on the old Dollarhlde ranch
nearby, became worried because
he hadn't been home for several
days. The body was discovered
about one-half mile from the old
Pacific highway.
Unmarried, Dollarhlde had
been batching on the Barron
place while working there, and
visited his home only occasion
ally. The deputy coroner's office
said there was no evidence of
foul play, and that an inquest
was doubtful.
Graveside funeral services at
Mountain View cemetery will be
held at 3 p. m. Monday. J. P.
Dodge and Sons of Ashland Is
in charge.
THREE BOYS HELD

With the arrest of three 13-year-old
Medford boys, Friday
afternoon, city police cleared up
recent burglaries at Currier's
grocery store, the Pacific Feed
and Seed company and the pri
vate garage of Homer 'Elwood,
43 North Orange street.
The boys are being held in
the county Jail and are sched
uled to appear in juvenile court
at 10 a. m. Monday.
Police said that two of the
youths signed written state
ments admitting the burglary of
Currier's grocery store late in
March and again April 22, and
the burglary of the Pacific Feed
and Seed company warehouse
May 9, and that two of them
confessed to entering the Elwood
garage and stealing radio equip
ment. All of the loot was recovered
by police, except for a few dol
lars and several stamps taken
from the grocery store and the
feed company.
Fire Scorches Medco
Unloading Platform
Some damage was done the
unloading platform at Medford
Corporation Saturday afternoon
by a fire which was started by
sparks from a burning trash pile
nearby. Answering a 4:30 p. m.
call, the fire department sent
a pumper to the scene and it
stood by while the blaze was ex
tinguished with the Medford
Corporation's hose.

Jackson county equestriennes
have formed their own mounted
sheriff's posse and will drill
and enjoy outings just as do
the men of the Jackson County
Sheriffs Mounted Posse. The
horsewomen will drill regularly
on Monday evenings at the fair
ground under the tutelage of
S. M. Tuttle, their first practice
being slated for tomorrow night.
Sixteen are now enrolled in
the women's posse and it is
planned to limit the number
admitted. Those wishing to Join
may contact any of the officers,
Lola Bengtson, captain: Harriet
Sparrow, first lieutenant and
treasurer, or Helen Dugan, sec
ond lieutenant and secretary.
Each member must have their
own horse, which may be kept
at the fairground stables or
taken there on drill nights from
private stables.
The men's posse now has 30
members and it is planned to
close the membership rolls at
40. The possemen drill each
Wednesday at 6 p. m., the drill
being followed by a feed.
On April 14 the men will
play hosts to the possewomen
at a beefstake feed in Prescott
park. A "chuck wagon" will
take the "vittles" to the park
and the posses will ride to the
park together.

Three parked cars were dam
aged late Friday night whe
machine driven by Robert G
Ivie of 427 North Riverside ave
nue, traveling west on West Main
street near the Newtown street
intersection, struck the rear end
of a parked car registered
Armond Tabor of 808 West Main
street, city police reported yes
terday.
Following the crash the Tabor
machine was jammed forward
into the rear of another parked
car, owned by Wade W. Crow
of the same address, and the
Crow auto in turn rammed into
the rear end of a machine owned
by Max C. Henne of the Hotel
Holland. All four cars suffered
damage, but nobody was hurt.
Ivie told police that he looked
up at a clock in his car, ancf
swerved from the traffic lane
into the Tabor machine.
