Berlin Acknowledges Ace

for Lost With His Craft
Berlin, May 23. UP) Ger
man submarines have sent 110,
300 tons of British shipping to
the bottom of the Atlantic in re
cent operations, the nazl high
command asserted today, but it
acknowledged that Germany's
ace U-boat commander, Guen
ther Prien has been given up for
lost with his ship.
i Nine of the British ships sunk
were picked out of one convoy
bound for England, the war bul
letin said, and accounted for 70,
900 tons.

tankers of 8.000, 10,000 and 13.

200 volunteer soldiers have de
serted to the British in Pales
tine and Trans-Jordan after a
fight with frontier guards in
which a few were killed and
wounded on both sides, it was
announced officially tonight.
The commander was Colonel
Collet.
Authorities denied, 'however,
that and De Gaullist (Free
French) troops had entered Syr
ia or that regular French troops

for subpoenas to force Secretary
of Labor Perkins and Major

fense witnesses at the deporta
tion hearing of Harry Bridges.
Mrs. Carol King, a defense at
torney, told Examiner Charles
B. Sears that she wanted to bring
out from these witnesses that
the CIO longshore leader was
being singled out for persecu
tion. Examiner Sears said he had no
authority to subpoena the three
officials or to subpoena docu
ments the government holds In
the case, which Mrs. King also
asked.

The war department will soon
ask confess, informed quarters
said today, for a $2,300,000,000
appropriation for a new "secur
ity fleet' of 13.000 bombing and
fighting planes part of which
will be ready for action in about
18 months.
As outlined by defense offic
ials, the 13,000-plane program
would be superimposed on the
present 21.000 army goal, as
well as other undisclosed addi
tions already proposed in the
regular military appropriations
