Scientists are attempting to iden
tify pine trees that may have
sheltered inhabitants of this area
million years ago.
And they're doing it with mir
rors. The forest, possibly of yel
low pine trees, once covered a
mountainside. The mountain
developed Into volcano, blew
its top, and waves of lava en
gulfed the trees.
The trees disappeared ages
ago. Not a splinter or a piece
of bark remain, but lava casts
of the trees, some of them still
standing upright, provide the
scientists with a basis for study
The lava chilled against the
green trunks, cracked as it cool
ed, and the giant trunks burned
away. Imprints made by the
bark and, charred bits remain
in the casts, some of which are
100 feet long. The investigators,
lacking elaborate electrical
lighting equipment in the iso
lated area, hit upon the use of
mirrors. They focus reflection
of the sun on the Interiors of
the tunnel-like casts.
Along with identifying the
trees definitely, the scientists
hope to be able to determine
whether the forest was destroy
ed before or after a vast pleisto
cene lake dried up.

trees have been discovered with-1
in a radius of 40 miles of New
berry crater.

another deer hunter yesterday
who mistook him for a deer.
His friend, Felice Radavero of

Oregon Airways, inc., Of
ficials Reveal Plans in
Visit to City; Wait Hearing
If a certificate is granted by
the civil aeronautics authority
to Oregon Airways, Inc., to op
erate on two routes in this state,
Medford eventually will be made
the center of the feeder line
system, H. E. Stearns, company
president, told the Mail Tribune.
Accompanied by T. T. Hinman,
ooerations manager, Mr. Stearns
came here yesterday to transact I
business.
A hearing on the petition will
be held by the civil aeronautics
board In Washington. D. C,
September 30. The company,
Mr. Stearns said, seeks penris
sion to operate passenger, mail
and express service from Port
land to Salem, Albany, Eugene
and the Coos Bay area, and from
Portland to The Dalles. Prine
ville. Redmond, Bend and Klam
ath Falls. If the certificate is
granted, permission will be
sought later to join the two legs
of the service with Medford as
the base, Mr- Steams stated.
Oregon Airways, Inc., began
operations on June 1, 1938, and
although It has since suspended
flights, it qualified for a cer
tificate so far as operations are
concerned by operating 128
round-trip flights from Portland
to Coos Bay and 47 round-trip
flights from Portland to Klam
ath Falls, Mr. Stearns asserted.
If permission is granted to
operate, new equipment would
have to be purchased. Mr.
Stearns said. He added that
the company was capitalized at
$50,000 and that a fiscal state
ment showing financial responsi
bility up to $300,000 was on
file with numerous other ex
hibits with the aeronautics au
thority. Scheduled for a hearing at the
same time is United Air Lines'
application for permission to ex
tend its service to Salem, Eu
gene and Klamath Falls.

LARGE AIR BASE

today to becoming one of the
nation's great army air bases
after the announcement last
night that it had been selected
as one of the four district air
base headquarters for the army
air corps in the United States.
The announcement was made
by Ma). Cen. Frank Lackland,
first wing general headquarters
commandant from March Field.
Calif., after he had inspected
Spokane airport facilities and
the accommodations at Fort
George Wright, shortly to be
left vacant by the fourth in
fantry. A wing headquarters force
force, comprising 3,000 officers
force, comprising S.00 officers
and men with two air force gen
erals in command will be per
manently assigned to the sta
tion, he said.
