FIRE RESTRICTION FIRST
ini:ini.iMM :inai.l,nn.i::.:,.--..(.i:i.j;3i:i)iai:i,nm III
IN FOREST AREAS ARRIVE AT CAMP;
ERASED BY RAINS FOR YEAR S STAY
Permits Still Required for
Slash Burning Hunters
Asked to Be Careful
The customary fire restric
tions In the national forest
were lifted today. Rogue River
national forest headquarters an
nounced.
Under todays ruling camp-
fires may be built now without
a permit; smoking is permis
sible in the forest areas; and no
fire tools are needed for camp
ing.
It was emphasized, however,
that permits are still required
for burning slashings, stubble
fields or any other waste ma
terial and that it is unlawful at
any time to leave a campfire
that has not been completely
extinguished.
Hunter Care Asked
Lifting the fire season restric
tions will make life in the for
ests more convenient and com
fortable for hunters who will
take to the woods tomorrow for
the opening of the hunting
season. The hunters were asked,
however, to be particularly
careful in handling campfires,
cigarettes and "warming" fires
In order to prevent forest fires.
Forest headquarters pointed
out that while the forests have
been dampened by rain and
that conditions in general are
favorable for fire prevention,
nevertheless there is danger in
the situation because hunters
are liable to become careless. It
was emphasized that a fire start
ed now is likely to smolder for
days or weeks and then sudden
ly flare up on a dry day and be
spread rapidly by a fall wind.
Late Fir Danger
Rogue River national forest
records show that 21 per cent
of the forest fires have occurred
after September 20 and that
fires after September 20 have
burned more than 60 per cent
of the total acreage destroyed
In the entire season. Not all of
these late fires were attributed
to late hunters but they Indicate
the danger of fires after the
first fall rains, headquarters
pointed out.
Thus far an excellent fire rec
ord has been established this
year in this part of the state.
Hunters were implored to helpi
continue this record.
