How About Changing Horses.
To the Editor:
In these history making days
many matters press for atten
tion. We wish here to touch
briefly two of them.
1. What right had that group
of pacifist, unpatriotic, selfish
mothers, be their views right or
wrong, to costume In black and
dominate the galleries of con
gress In order, by such pressure,
to enforce THEIR WILL on
those lawmakers? Would they
be allowed to thus pack a court
room with the avowed object of
swaying the jury, regardless of
the evidence? And is not the
principle the same as that of
the so-called "hunger march"
on Washington, to demand cer
tain legislation? Such methods,
If allowed, will be used oftener
for evil than for good. Con
gress must not be bulldozed by
these small but determined pres
sure croups. Regardless of the
issues Involved, such procedure
should be banned by law. It Is
imported, un-American.
2- We are warned against
"changing horses in the middle
of the stream." But much de
pends on the character of both
horse and stream. Sometimes
changing is the only safe and
sane course. T. E. Tracy's re
cent article on that subject was
good, but too brief. Where would
England be right now If they
had not. In the middle of the
stream, changed from Chamber
lain to Churchill? And where
will the U. S. be four years
from today, unless we change
NOW from New Deal to Anti
New Deal?
Slightly changing the figure,
suppose a boatman promises to
put us safely across the river.
but In midstream, instead of
taking us where we expected
to go, or even back where we
came from, he spends seven
long hours tinkering with his
motor, installing new gadgets,
while we drift steadily toward
the falls below. If, just then, s
rescue boat reaches us, I'm
strong for changing boats. For
seven long years, with the roar
of the falls growing louder and
ever louder in our ears, Roose
velt has been busy Installing
new gadgets on his "machine,''
such as destruction of food, soak
ing the rich, debt, dole, dicta
tion ("MUST," but of course "no
comments on pending legisla
tion"). The risk of the change
is aa nothing compared to the
risk In our present plight.
The wreck of democracy on
the western hemisphere darkly
Impends- Hurry with that res
cue boat.
Remember the Kerensky epi
sode In Russia, and the so-called
"People'! Front" episode in
France.
If we value American democ
racy we should CHANGE
BOATS NOW.
