WHALE OF STORY
TOLD BY LOCAL
FISHING PARTY
Four fishermen and their
guide got the fright of their lives
yesterday when a whale took
two of their plugs and for a time
seemed bent on taking them on
long voyage.
In the 16-foot, out-board mo
tored boat were Walter Young,
Delbert Bergman and Carl
Meyer of Mcdlord, Leonard Hall
of Ashland and Floyd Clark, the
Biiide. of Brookings. Using plugs
the men were fishing for cod or
halibut three miles off the coast
at Brookings. They were think
ing how placid everything was
when suddenly something took
Bergman and Meyer's plugs and
yanked the boat half-way around
with a terrific jerkj.
Coming to their senses with
Jolt, the men saw they had
caught onto a whale. The huge
crecturc raced out 130 feet, gave
a leap out of the water and with
a quick twist broke the lines.
The fishermen had a movie
camera to record unusual events
during their trip, but they did
not stop to get any shots of the
whale. They were afraid it
would return and upset the boat.
60 they headed for shore as fast
as the motor would chug.
Clark estimated the whale at
10 to 35 tons.
Frank. Driscoll, 33, waived
preliminary hearing in Justice
of the peace court this morning
on a city police charge of fel
ony and was bound over to the
grand Jury under $500 bail.
Driscoll, who has a city po
lice record of drunkenness and
felony, was arrested Sunday af
trr allegedly stealing a robe out
of a parked car on Front street.
