Eugene Visitor Tells Hectic
Experiences as Crew

Four times since the war broke,
Sam Edward Carr has had ships
sunk from-under him, either Dy
aerial bombs or submarine tor
pedoes. Each time he escaped injury
while many of his shipmates
died, the Glasgow-born Scot,
about 40, related as he paused
here long enough to recite a few
of his experiences. He is on his
way from Seattle to ?ati Fran
cisco where he hopes to get
aboard another ship and get
back into the war with the Brit
ish. First Off Ireland
His first escape from a sinking
vessel was 175 miles off the
coast of Ireland when two Ger
man planes halted the S. S. Nan
kin, on the way to Gydnia After
bombs destroyed the ship, Carr
was taken aboard another ship
in the convoy and returned to
Glasgow. Then he sailed in a
convoy of 17 ships for Portland,
Ore., on the S. S. Seedbo for a
flour cargo. Again enemy planes
blasted the convoy, sinking
seven ships, including his own.
He was one of eight saved from
his craft. Twenty-six were lost.
A torpedo boat returned him to
Glasgow again.
Then he boarded the Silver
Pore, safely crossed the Atlantic
and finally reached Seattle,
Wash., from where the ship
turned to join a British convoy.
Clung To Plank
After sailing around Cape
Horn a torpedo struck his vessel
one dark June night 250 miles
off Burenos Aires. All the men
in the engine room were killed
by the direct hit. Carr was
thrown overboard by the impact
and clung to a plank for four
hours before he was picked up
by the destroyer Orite. Eventu
ally he was back in Glasgow,
where he later sailed on the
Silver Glow for Seattle. He left
that boat, he said, because of the
numerous Chinese and East In
dians in the crew.
"I'd rather sail with British
ers," he explained.

program of traffic safety educa
tion is being launched in Oregon
I as the fall school terms get un
1 der way, it was announced by
' Earl Snell, secretary of state
and sponsor of the state high
I way and street safety program.
Safe driving courses will be
conducted in virtually every
I high school in the state this
year, Snell said. Two state ex
aminers will conduct classes in
various sections of the state dur
ing the school year, each course
lasting seven weeks with stu
dents receiving one hour of in
struction each week. The
courses features at-the-wheel in-!
struction in all phases of auto
mobile driving. Snell related.
Many schools in the state now
include instruction in safety in
their curricula and the instruc
tion manual "Are Young Driv
ers Good Drivers?", distributed
by the secretary of state's of
fice, is available for the schools.
The courses are designed to de
velop proper attitudes of safe
driving, with the thought in
mind that individuals with the
proper driving attitudes will be
safer drivers, Snell said.
Schools Praised
"The schools In Oregon are
doing splendid work in the saf
ety field," Snell said. "Student
enrolled in the various courses
are becoming definitely safety
minded and that means that
when they start driving, they
will be conscious of the import
ance of developing good driv.
ing practices as a means of pre
venting accidents."
An intensive program of bi
cycle safety is planned for this
year, the campaign being keyed
to a new bicycle manual being
prepared by the traffic safety
division of the state department,
Snell revealed. This manual
will be distributed to youngsters
of school age and will tie in
with the various local municipal
bicycle safety programs, he said.
It will contain material relating
to proper bicycle riding prac
tices and will outline the rules
and regulations pertaining to bi
cycle riding in this state.
CCC Helps
Safety education programs in
CCC camps in the state have
formed an important part of the
educational projects in this or
ganization and the safety text
distributed by the state depart
ment is widely used in these
programs. Parent-Teacher asso
ciations are stressing the value
of safety education and are en
couraging comprehensive pro
grams in connection with their
work with the schools of the
state.
The Oregon Traffic Safety Ex
change, monthly bulletin pub
lished by Snell'i office, will be
sent to various schools of the
state this year for use in their
class room discussions on the
safety problem. This is a new
phase of the program, Snell said.
