Lewis Porter was said today
to be getting along satisfactorily
in the Osteopathic hospital
where he is receiving treatment
for injuries suffered Wednesday
evening when a dynamite cap
exploded in his hand. He is the
14-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs.
L. A. Porter of Little Applegate.
The boy lost two fingers of
the left hand, received injuries
to the left eye and chest wounds
Riding his bicycle near his
home, he saw the dynamite cap
lying alongside the road. Not
knowing what it was, he
stopped his bicycle, leaned over
and picked the cap up with his
left hand, it was reported. The
cap exploded Just as he picked
it up. Where the cap came from
was not determined.
Mr. and Mrs. Porter brought
their son to the hospital here.
Washington, Sept. 13 (Pi
General John J. Pershing mark
ed his 80th birthday anniversary
today with a plea that America
"face the facts'' on an imminent
danger of war.
Speaking over the radio Just
after receiving the Distinguished
Service Cross in a White House
ceremony, Pershing said:
'Twenty-one years ago none
of us dreamed that the calamity
of war would come again to the
world so soon and in such hide
ous and devastating form.
Imperative Warning
"But we must face the facts of
today. Their warning call to
America is shrill and impera
tive. The danger is imminent.
The call comes not only to us
who fought in the World war
and to those who stood ready,
but it comes to every patriotic
citizen living under the protec
tion of our great government.
"To meet it, we must pledge
ourselves anew to fulfill our
obligations to the nation, and
again, avow eternal, devotion to
the principles of liberty and Jus
tice upon which this nation
rests."
The decoration Pershing re
ceived at the White House was
for "extraordinary heroism in
action against hostile fanatical
Moros at Mount Baksak, Jolo,
Philippine Islands, on June IS,
1913."
Refused In 1922
He refused the award in 1922
because he was then army chief
of staff and thus had control of
the decorations board, also, he
was quoted as saying, because
he did not think the action it
recognized was up to the stan
dard of the A. E. F. in 1917-18.
The award citation said Persh
ing, then a brigadier general,
"personally assumed command
of the assaulting line at the
most critical period when only
about IS yards from the last
Moro position. His encourage
ment and splendid example of
personal heroism resulted in a
general advance and the prompt
capture of the hostile strong
hold." Also at the White House, the
old soldier received from the
new French ambassador, Gaston
Henri-Haye, a personal letter
from his old friend, Marshal
Henry Petain, and a letter from
the city of Versailles where
.stands a monument to Pershing.
