The first is to be held at En
terprise Grange at Wimer on
September 12. Live Oak. Gold
Hill, and Belleview Granges are

sisted by Viola Pinkerton of

Oak Grove community Is
proud of its 23 exhibitors at the j
Jackson county home economics
fair sponsored by the Business
and Professional Women's club.
On seven different projects tliese
exhibitors took 48 prizes, be
sides special honors.
In forestry, Robert Shelby placed
first, Carol Utile sixth, Bobby Bsrbee
eighth, Raymond McKnight ninth.
This waa the nrat year tor this
project in Oak Grove.
Bobby Bsrbee placed third and
Carl Reich fifth In machine wood
working claaa.
Homemsklng project first plsce

Donna Mae Thomas, third to Darlsne
Oleaves. fourth to Betty Carmau.

Three divisions of canning were
exhibited. In first division Viola
Carman placed second, Phylisa Wer
ner fourth, Lola Oober fifth, and
Donna Mae Thomsa sixth. In second
division Louise Brltton won first,
Betty Carman third, Darlene Gleaves
fourth. Hazel Saltmarsh placed sec
ond in third division, Joan Denney
third, Janice Pitts fourth, Bettle Lue
Reich tilth, Marie Logan alxth.
Knitting, a hobby project, was car
ried by Joan Denney. who placed
third.
Two cooking projects were carried
In Oak Grove; the second division,
which apectsllzea In cakes, and third
division, specializing In bread.
Derva Sater placed first In sponge
cakes, Haael Saltmarsh third. Viola
Carman sixth. In angel food cakes.
Lola Oober waa second. Lola also
placed first at the state fair.
In division three, the exhibit con
sisting of one loaf of white bread.
Janloe Pitts placed second, Phylisa
Werner eighth. Betty Carman seventh.
Club members were enrolled In four
divisions of clothing. In first year
clothing Prestona Dark placed sixth;
in clothing three, "the school drees."

formed the cooking demonstration
team and Donna Maa Thomsa and
Phylisa Werner the canning demon
stration team. Each was awarded a
scholarship to 4-H summer school.
Oak Orove had two champion ex
hlblta. One waa In forestry by Robert
Schelby; the other clothing by Joan
Denney.

of the styla review was awarded Joan

Opening Day More Com
ing After Fruit Harvest
Gold Hill. Sept. 11 (Spl.)
School opened here Sept. 9 with
241 students enrolled the first
day. Many yet to enroll are still
employed in fruit picking and
packing. There wera 200 en
rolled the first week last year.
Many improvements have
been made on the gymnasium
and the work is still in progress.
The exterior has been complete
ly repainted. With the addition
of another classroom, provided
for the third grade, the crowded
condition of the grade school has
been eliminated to some extent.
A new school bus has also been
added this year which makes all
of the buses new and modern.

Salem, (Spl) The typical
traffic accident victim In Ore
gon during the first six months
of 1940 was a male pedestrian
over 85 years of age, who was
committing some unsafe action
at the time he was struck, ac
cording to a study of the sta.
tistics recently completed by the
secretary of state's office. At the
time of the accident, the pave
ment was dry, the weather was
clear and the time was between
6 and 10 p.m. on a week-end.

dents reported to the secretary
of state's office during the first
six months indicated that 42 per
cent of the persons killed In
traffic crashes were pedestrians
and that BU percent of the pe
destrian fatalities were over SS
years of age while 58 per cent
were engaged In some obvious
ly unsafe action at the time they
were struck. Jaywalking and
walking with traffic instead of
facing it on highways were the
two chief errors chalked up
against pedestrians
Excessive speed, failure to
yield right-of-way and driving
off the roadway. In most cases
probably due to speed too great
tor conditions, were the chief
actions of drivers contributing
to traffic accidents, the study
disclosed. Of the 83 fatal-acci
dent drivers who had some driv
ing fault checked against them.
86 percent fell in these three
classifications.
There were 17,388 traffic ac
cidents In Oregon during the
first half of the year, with 161
persons killed and 3,160 injured.
Sixty percent of the fatal accl.
denta occurred In rural areas
and of the fatal accidents re
ported from cities only 29 per
cent occurred In business dis
tricts. Train-automobile crashes
claimed four lives and blcycle-
auio crashes took five lives, all
being persons under 24 years
o age.
