Motor Trucks and Trains to
Carry Oregon Troops

Salem, Sept. 11 UP) Concen
tration of troops of the 41st di
vision in the Fort Lewis-Camp
Murray area will be completed
by Monday, September 23, Gen
eral George A. White, division
commander, said today.
Troops will be mobilized Mon
day and some elements, includ
ing advance detachments and
service troops, will report to the
Puget Sound camp by Friday of
next week.
Motor trucks and trains will
carry Oregon troops to the con
centration camp, while at the
same time divisional troops from
all over the northwest begin a
converging movement. Tables
for movement of 13,000 officers
and men are now being prepared
by General White.
Recruiting, proceeding rap
idly, is expected to bring the di
vision to its peacetime strength
of 13.000.
Active training will start im
mediately on arrival at the
Washington camps.

WALKER TAKES OATH

Frank C. Walker took the oath
of office today as postmaster
general. The oath was administered by
Stanley Reed, associate Justice
of the supreme court, in Presi
dent Roosevelt's office. Wal
ker succeeds James A- Farley,
who resigned August 31.

Answer was filed yesterday by
Niedcrmeycr, Inc., Callie Palm
and Mary Wolfe, In the $25,000
damage suit filed against them
by Harry Lowis. as the result
of a fall down the Lake hotel
stairs, last March, In which he
sustained an injured hip. The
case has been set for trial late
this month.
The plaintiff alleges the fall
was the result of the stairway
not being properly protected
and lighted.
The upper floor of the build
ing at West Main and Grape
streets is used as a hotel. It is
owned by Niedermeyer. Inc., and
Callie Palm. Mary Wolfe is the
landlady.
The answer holds the fall was
due to Lowis not exercising due
care and caution in traveling the
stairs and, furthermore, as a
resident of the hotel for some
time previous to the accident,
had full knowledge of their con
dition and assumed any and all
risks arising.

yesterday
Franklin A. Elrod, Jr. of Cen
tral Point entered a plea of
guilty to driving an auto with
improper lights, and was fined
$2 and costs.
Haiel Duley, 42. a resident of
Caves Junction, passed away at
local hospital on Tuesday
afternoon following an illness
of three weeks. She is survived
by her husband. West Duley.
Funeral services will take
place from the chapel of the
Perl Funeral Home Thursday at
1 p. m with the Rev. S. L.
Divine. D.D., officiating. Final
rites will be in Siskiyou Me
morial park.

tempting to fly supplies to a
marooned party, spends long
hours charting courses and
drumming up business for her
six-plane line.
Prospectors, miners and trap
pers scattered on the Alaskan
tundra north of Nome depend
on her for mail during the long
Arctic nights. The Mirow planes
cart gold nuggets worth some
times up to $75,000 a load, and
enable miners to move in need
ed freight a ton at a time.
Next spring, before ice on the
Bering sea has broken, a plane
will call at little Eskimo village
for cargoes of fox furs. If the
planes did not call, shipments
would have to wait for the first
boat which comes in mid-sum-mer.
Flying is hazardous In this
country. The Nome airport often
is blanketed by fog, and airports
seldom are much more than
cleared areas on the tundra, or
sand beaches.
Reared in Nome, Mrs. Mirow
knows. Alaska and its problems.
She has a radio operator's li
cense and operates the ground
stations which keep in contact
with the Mirow aircraft.
With all her work, she has
time to keep house with her
mother and her two young chil
dren.
Vawter, railroad conductor, got
so excited he bid six hearts in
stead of a grand slam in no
trumps. He made it, as trumps
weren't bunched against him.
