Buy a New Dress and Cast a Vote
For New Ruler Of Style Trend
By Amy Porter
A P. Fashion Writer.
This is election year in the
fashion world.
Another 12 months will see
the names of a few designers
emerge as dictators of style,
successors of Paris.
You'll cast your vote, whether
you realize it or not, whenever
you buy a dress. Because some
American designer will have
thought it up, and every sale of
his creation will increase h 1 1
chances to be an originator,
rather than a follower, of style
trends.
The fashion industry in Amer
ica is busy cooking up names for
you.
The manufacturer who never
before gave public recognition
to the hard-working designer
In his office is now busily try
ing to get the designer's name
into fashion headlines.
French Names Pass Out.
It's good-bye to French names
such as Mainbocher, Lanvin, Le
gong, and hello to such Amer
ican names as Clare Potter, Net
tie Rosenstein, Dorothy Cox, Jo
Copeland.
But do you care? Did you
ever care?
When the salesgirl used to
say, 'This is a Schiaparelli mod
el, very new, very smart," were
you impressed? Or did you say.
"Urn hum, but I don't like the
color. Show me that green
dress over there."
The mayor of New York, who
is just as desirous as anybody
that New York become the
world's style center, has an idea
that all the excitement about
the loss of Paris design service
is so much nonsense.
Says They Don't Care.
At a meeting with the fashion

Salinas Feels Quake
Salinas, Cal., Sept. 7.-
A light earthquake was felt
here at 5:15 a. m. today. No
damage was reported. Residents

press, he argued that most
American women don't know or
care who designs their clothes,
so long as they are pretty. To
prove his point he called In his
secretary and said, "Can you
name five designers for me.
please?"
The s e c r e tary hesitatingly
said. "Well. Clare Potter," and
stopped right there-
As for French style leader
ship, American designers will
make their own trends and
get more pay.
And salesgirls will forget
Paris names and learn to say
instead, "It's a John Doe model,
very new, very smart."
Perhaps you still won't care,
but the names you hear repeated
most often will decide what
length your skirt will be,
whether your belt hits you
above or below your middle,
and how wide will be the shoul
der effect.
If you care which way the
fashion winds blow, you'd bet
ter get in there and root for the
designers who make the kind
of clothes you like.
Mayor LaGuardia has an in
teresting theory.
"I can tell you why Paris set
styles," he said. "It was be
cause the buyers all liked to
go to Paris for a holiday."
Most of the clothes worn In
America have always been de
signed by Americans- The only
thing we got from Paris was
that mysterious something call
ed "trends."
Must Make Own Trends.
Paris decided whether skirts
should be wide or narrow, long
or short, and how bulky shoul
ders should b. American de
signers bowed to Paris trends,
went on alone from there.

ley, it was announced yesterday
by Harry Dorman of Portland,
company president who came
here to look over the local unit.
In addition to supplies from
the 58 acres the company has
under contract, the Medford
plant is now in a position to
handle a surplus supply of 15
tons of tomatoes daily, Mr. Dor
man said. Employment at the
plant would be increased mater

the additional tomatoes, he
added. At peak operations the
plant employes 35 workers and
it is desired to operate at peak
capacity now, he related.
Any growers interested in
disposing of surplus tomatoes
may contact William Drumm,
general manager of the Knight
plant here.
Last year the Medford plant
packed 27,000 cases of tomato
juice, catsup, chili sauce and
cocktail sauce. All the products,
two millions separate packages
last year, bear a Rogue River
label and thus advertise the val
ley.
The Knight plant here has
been in operation 14 years. It
is the only plant in Oregon
where catsup is produced.
