The following recreation:
I ullelin, last of the season, w;
issued today by Rogue Rive
national forest headquarters:
"The forest is never mor.
lovely than just after the first
fall rain. The freshened green
of the trees is interspersed with
bright red mountain ash berries
and autumn-colored shrubs and
the aroma of pine and fir seems
heightened by the clearness oi
the air.
"Roads throughout the Rogue
Hiver national forest were much
improved by the rain and witli
a little sunshine the camps will
be in good condition.
"Motor trips to the higher
elevations are attractive now
because visibility is excellent.
Some suggestions for these trips
are the following:
"1. Ashland loop from Ash
land to Applegate via Siskiyou
summit. A possible variation for ,
persons who have once covered
this route is to leave the road
at Dutchman peak and drive
down the Klamath forest road
to the Klamath river, passing
near the Cinnabar springs
(through a game refuge where
deer are usually seen), and re
turning to Medford via the
Pacific highway. Another side
trip is available by taking the
Water Gulch road from near
the Beaver-Sulphur camp, past
the Cinnabar lookout and back
to Medford via Little Applegate.
Special motorlog sketch maps
of the Ashland Loop are avail
able for free distribution in the
forest supervisor's office.
"2. To Blue Ledge mine from
the Applegate road near the
Applegate CCC camp. This is a
steep mountain road to the
abandoned copper mine, in a
location affording excellent
views of the high peaks along
the Oregon-California boundary
of the Applegate district.
"3. Star Gulch, from Big Ap
plegate road near Star ranger
station to Thompson Creek road
with side trip to the Tallowbox
lookout, returning to the high
way at Applegate postoffice. '
There is an improved camp on
Star gulch and another on
Thompson creek.
"4. To Lake of the Woods
over the Dead Indian road via
Ashland, and return past Fish :
lake, over Robinson Butte road j
to Dead Indian Soda Springs
and past Lake Creek to Med
ford. Take the side trip to Rob
inson Butte lookout, too. I
"5. The new Tiller-Trail high
way from Trail over the Ump
qua divide, returning via the
Pacific highway. 1
6. Up Elk creek from the
Crater Lake highway at Rogue
Elk, along the Umpqua divide
past Huckleberry gap, return
ing to the Crater Lake highway
at Woodruff Meadows.
"7. To Hershberger lookout
from the Diamond Lake high
way, past the Rabbit Ears and
to one of the highest points on
the Umpqua divide,
"These are only a few of the
24d
many trips which may be made.

building or any ranger or guard
station,
"Fishing at Fourmile lake Is
still fair with cluster eggs for
silversides 'and rainbow. At
Rocky Point expert anglers are
making fair catches. Fishing in
the smaller streams is practical
ly ended.
"The Umpqua forest reports
that at Diamond lake trolling
and fly fishing are Improving
after the storm, with nice
catches of trout ranging from
one to six pounds being made.
"In Rogue river trout fishing
is reported good from Prospect
to Grants Pass, the best lures
being blue charm and yellow
eagle. Steelhead fishing is Im
proving slowly and a few sal
man are moving in on the
spawning beds which will ma!
single-egg fishing fairly good in
a short time. The best lure:
this week were Lady Caroline
and red hackle: the best loca
tions, Fern riffle and Patrick
riffle.
"Forest fire restrictions are
effective until September 30.
In spite of the rain, there is
still considerable danger of fire
spreading and continuance of
care is urged.
"This is our last bulletin of
the season. There are, however,
still many opportunities for en
joyable recreation In the forest
and information will be gladly
furnished on request."
