. .ILRDAY: Coslttncs wr
uadcl reluctant Judge franck
to reveal the Tayiori" plon.
They vent to make the ranch
into a dairy farm.
Chapter 11
Friendly Enemy
pONSTANCE thought quickly
-... a dairy ranch, that was
something she could run. And
Michael had changed, ergo, the
would adjust herself.
"Judge." she amiled at the old
man mistilv. "tell me about
dairying and why you, think it
the thing.
"Surelv ." screed the old man,
thinking only what an adorable
child ahe was wun tier oiue-oiaca
hair and tapphire blue eye.
"With the railroad running
through the ranch, you have
meani of getting your product
to market without aouDie nan
dling. Your acres are extensive
enough for dairy herd grazing be
cause much of the food is pre
pared r ash which li supposed to
stimulate your herds to produce
the maximum quantity of milk.
"Your markets are more stable.
The populace consumes a com
paratively definite amount of
milk products, butter, cream and
cheese. You don't go into com
petitive market, but sell to i cen
tral depot, from where the bulk
is distributed."
Constance nodded. It sounded
very simple. You merely ex
changed your beef cattle for
cows, sold their milk in gallon
cans. Instead of on the hoof . . .
and the cows were still on the
ranch, instead of having to be re
placed. "I wonder," ahe mused, "how
much the Taylors were counting
on investing in the turn-over."
"Twenty thousand." answered
the judge, promptly, then looked
t his watc.i. "Hmmn. this talking
of beef has certainly given me an
appetite. Let's get us a steak."
Twilight was blurring the
square when thev left the office
building. The narrow street
where Dolores' friends lived, and
where Dolores was happily en
gaged In gossiping, was dull gray.
But when they came out on
the waterfront. Constance saw
that the tun had left splotches
of yellow on the incoming fog.
and below it the olive-green
waters of the bay heaved rest
lessly. The cafe was low-ceillnged.
filled with. roughly clad men, I
few women and a thick curtain
of smoke.
Judge Franck Introduced Con
stance to everyone they encoun
tered as "Michael Mahoney't off
ipring." Cattlemen, dairy men. seamen,
loggers and railroad men bowed
to Constance, and then the Judge
came to a table where sat a large.
woman who looked as thoueh she
had stepped out of an English
hunting print.
"Here's someone who can tell
you all about dairying." the Judge
said.
They joined thit Mrs. MacKel
vev. and as they dined on suc
culent steak, crisp French fries
and fragrant coffee, Constance
listened, looked and marveled.
The woman waa the personifi
cation of vitality. Her features
were strongly cast but totally at
variance with the slender, well
f roomed hands. "I know." she
aughed as she saw Constance
looking at her hands. "I was a
musician, then when Mac died
I had to take over. Beef cattle
were out In this section, to I took
to dairving."
In the end she Invited Con
stance to visit her for a day or
sn. "Though I warn vou." she said,
"if there's a drop of the old
Mick's blood In your veins, you'll
never be the same after that
visit."
And then through the haze of
moke. Constance saw a man
come into the cafe and wondered
t the wav life quickened Its'beat:
at the sudden aura of romance
which apread over the dusky
room.
Double Power
DF.TE, old fellow." "Hi Pedro."
"Taylor!" Voices shouted a
welkin of greeting and hands
reached out to clasn his, or D'lll
him towards their table.
"Now what." aked Constance
of the ludte. to slide her disturb
ance, "brings Pedro here?"
Franck pushed hia platter back
with a sigh of contentment.
"Probably looking for informa
tion." he answered.
"If vou ever wnt to know any
thing." elucidated Mrs. MacKel
vev. "come in here and let the
other fellow do the talking."
Constance barelv heard her.
Tavlnr wss making his wav to
wards their tahl,.. His eves, with
some unfnthorriable expression,
were merting hers. How was she
to treat hir-? He had become her
enemy. And more than that he
held double power, for she had
to guard herself against this be
wildering response of her heart
to the man. as well as guard
aeamst the shrewdness of his
minit.
What had Michael Mahonev
done, how had he fought such
friendlv enemies? The Judge had
told her, chuckling: "He threw
them off-guard with his affability
until he had them in a rorner "
Constance smiled at Peter Tay
lor. "Hi'. Pedro." she greeted.
"Hi', Michael." he answered.
"Sit down. son. sit down"
urged Mrs. M.-uKelvev. "What
brings vou to town of an eve
ning?" Taylor nodded at Constance.

Bowman
"Mist Cabnllo. I thought it wouSd
be easier to pick her up, whole,
in Beachport, than to face Min if
she ran Ttm'i car over the cliff."
Constance turned to Mrs. Mac
Kelvey. "How you widowt do
arouse the protective instinct in
the male of the tpeciet."
The woman laughed. "That my
dear, wat self protection. T'm'a
Min hat a complex over that car.
It's the only thing that runt that
she hasn't been able to drive."
"Which reminds me," offered
Pedro. "Min't brother it in town
and he'll take the car home and
save you the trouble of leaving
from Fuller't Junction."
"I suppose." returned Constance
sweetly, , "it will be easier to
keep track of me if I have no ear
at my disposal."
"Judge," Taylor addresaed him
self to the old man, "did you ever
before hear a woman admit the
needed watching?"
In the end, Constance agreed
to be driven home. She had
dreaded the ordeal, and when
they picked up Dolores that wo
man's face wat ludicrous with its
expression of relief.
A two-hour drive In clear
weather was a three-hour drive
in the heavy fog: three hours, cut
off from the rest of the world by
a milk white curtain; three hourt
of enchantment
Dolores, warmed by visiting
wine and a blanket, curled up in
the back teat and slept soundly.
Constance, warmed at much by
the forethought at by the great
polo coat of Meg's, tat watching
Pet'ro' hands on the wheel, his
Indian profile with lines of
strength, or wat it cruelty, from
nostril to the outer corner of hit
lip.
She had a moment of smug
satisfaction in finding that hit
profile didn't give the impression
of startling perfection that hit
full face gave, and "then, dis
turbed, the found in its rude fear
lessness something more devas
tating to her morale.
"Warm enough?" Without
looking at her he reached over
to tuck her hands under the rug
and give them a scolding pat and
Constance wondered if It were
possible for a human heart to
jump to one's throat and lodge
there.
'Don't Fight'
REBELLIOUSLY Constance
withdrew her hands and laid
them, amall and white, on top of
the scarlet rug.
He looked at her then. "Don't
fight. Conchita."
"Don't fight?" Hot anger
splashed her cheeks. How did he
know? The conceit of him: the
insufferable egotism of him. She'd
make a catechism of all that Sam
and Min had said. She'd sav It
over hour by hour, particularly
Min't parting words: "prettier
girls than you"
". . . next time." she noticed he
was twinging the car back to the
center of the road, sharply, "I'll
have Dolores sit up here with me.
She doesn't take my mind off the
road."
There was balm In that, a small
measure of triumph. Constance
tucked her hands under the robe.
Perhaps she was different from
these coeds, these "prettier girlt."
Perhaps Pedro hated this some
thing between them at much at
she.
And she thought, with some
thing akin to horror: "If I felt
this way about John. I wouldn't
care about the family: I wouldn't
care about being solvent and
meeting him on his own
ground"
Milet later she wondered why
John, who was everything fine
and true and honorable, gave her
onlv a feeling of comfort and se
curity and dependability, Rut
those were the qualities one
needed in marriage. They were
enduring.
"Pedro." the reasoned. "Is like
too many cocktails and there't
alwavt a morning after."
Pedro held her hand at he
helped her from the car at the
ranch house. "If vou don't want
me to drive vou around, vou can
ask Juliano for a boy," he ad
vised. Constance looked awav qulcklv.
wondering if her eves had told
him she did want him to drive
her. always ... but she would be
eternally blessed if she'd have
him.
"Ellen MaeKelvev't place." he
continued, "it out of Fuller'!
Junction."
"How did you know?" the
flashed.
"I have wavs." he retorted,
laughing. "And now that vou
know our plans for the ranch,
what are you going to do'"
"Call on vour u'nts for that
answer." she laughed. "What
were vou really doing in Beach
port" "Tomorrow you'll know." he
promised.
Dolores greeted her the moment
she stirred, and Constance, aware
of a golden day. sensed, rather
than heard a stir about the
rancho.
"Today." advised Dolores, com
ing to the bed with a tr.iv. "we
have Fiesta del foro. Already your
guests begin to arrive. You should
now hurry, setiorita. to greet
them.
"Of yesterday." she poured an
amber stream of coffee into a tur
quoise cup. "Senor Pedro have in
vited them And he have broueht
