Driver Tasts Persons seek
ing licenses or permits to oper
ate motor vehicles will be ex
amined here as usual on Satur-,
day. A state examiner will be
in council chambers on the top
floor of city hall from 9 a.m.
to 5 p.m. and applicants are
asked to report to him.

ders to report for duty with
the regular army at Fort Mason,

fice of the quartermaster at Fort
Mason. Capt. and Mrs.. Brugger
and their daughter Audrey will
leave by motorcar Thursday for
their army station. They have
resided here at 630 West Fourth
street. Philo D.' Smith will suc
ceed Brugger as CCC district
subsistence officer.

Join Army Enlistment In the
U. S. army of six more youths
of this district was announced
today by Staff Sgt. Willis S.
Estep, in charge of the Medford
recruiting station. Accepted ten
tatively for enlistment by Sgt.
Estep, the youths were formal
ly enlisted at Portland after
passing their final qualifying
examination. They were: Wll
liam R. Marshall, Brownsboro
18th signal platoon, Alaska;
Chester E. Dunn. Roseburg,
63rd coast artillery, Fort Mac
Arthur, Cal.; Harold Van Grev-

Ex-Resident Here Mr. and
Mrs; L. H. McGuire. former res
idents of Jacksonville who now
reside in Norton. Va., are spend
ing a few days here renewing
old friendships. At one time Mr.
McGuire was project superin
tendent of the Applegate CCC
ramp under U S. forest service
Jurisdiction. He left here in
March. 1936, to serve with army
engineers on the construction of
the Fort Peck. Montana, dam.
largest earthen dam in the
world. He is now with the U.
S. bureau of mines, safety di
vision, being engineer in charge
of the Norton station, his terri
tory embracing Virginia and the
east half of Kentucky. On a va
cation trip. Mr. and Mrs. Mc
Guire and their daughter Susan
Louise arrived last evening by
motorcar. After a few clays lier
they will motor to Seattle and
thence cacic to Norton.

time commission today an
nounced an examination for
deck and engineer cadets in the
merchant marine. Unmarried
men 18 to IS years old of good
moral character are eligible to
compete for the examination.

Driver Fined Charles S. San
ders, 18. Phoenix, was fined $25
and $4 50 costs when he pleaded
guilty to a state police charge
of reckless driving in Justice of
the peace court yesterday af
ternoon. He had spent the pre
vious night in county Jail after
being arrested on a bench war
rant for failing to appear In
court on the day he was sup
posed to. He told Judge William
R. Coleman that he had come to
court as cited but that a trial
was going on and he did not
wait.
Constable Back Nick Young
resumed his duties as constable
this morning after enjoying a
vacation in British Columbia.
He was accompanied on the va
cation trip by Mrs. Young and
his nephew, Charles Young, and
his wife of Salinas. Cal. The
group returned to Medford last
night and Mr. and Mrs. Charles
Young left for their home this
morning. The travelers ar.lnnrn.
ed in Vancouver and Victoria.
Constable Young said there was
less evidence of war in Canada
than in this country- relating
that he saw no training of sol
diers and heard very little talk
about the conflict.

Sheriff Syd I. Brown will
leave here Sunday to take four
prisoners to the state penitenti
ary in Salem.
On the return trip, Sheriff
Brown said, Melburn Oswald.
42, of 346 N. Front street would
be brought from Toledo to
Medford to face a charge here of
larceny by bailee- The sheriff
said Oswald was accused of buy
ing a car from D. E. Lawson and
paying for it with a worthless
check. Oswald was arrested by
state police in Toledo, Brown
stated.
The prisoners to be taken to
prison are Kenneth I. Becknell,
37, transient, not more than two
years for stealing a car; Fred J.
Peebles, 24, Medford, not more
than three years for contribut
ing to the delinquency of a
minor; Albert C. Mertz, 42, Ash
land, not more than three years
for obtaining money under false
pretenses; and Arthur Griffith,
41, Portland, not more than two
years for committing a burglary
not in a dwelling.

closed settlement today of $354,.
000 in gift tax claims for 1924
against 22 persons- named In
trusts established by Charles
Henry Sanford who died In
1928.
Terms of the settlement were
not revealed.
The 22 persons had petitioned
the board against the internal
revenue bureau's claim that
they owed the $354,000. Among
persons named in the stipula
tions and the Individual
amounts involved In the con
troversy were Frederick I.
