building for trial on a charge of
attempted escape. They fled
under fire last April 11 through
gate of tha federal prison, but
were captured 77 hours later,
Weary and hungry, on the island.
After the death of Chitty, they
promptly changed their pleas to
"guilty" and were sentenced by
Judge Leon Yankwlch of Los
Angeles to five years In prison,
to follow expiration of their
current terms.
After Chitty's death. Vargo
said Kyle, shaken visibly, beg
ged: "Shoot me."
