able change in merchants' cau
tious attitude toward future com

"Wholesaler! felt the Improve
ment at retail in an Immediate
increase in spot orders. The na
ture of the inquiries again indi
cated that retailers were running
close to shore in the matter of
stocks.
"Wholesalers reported several
instances where orders showed
more interest in deliveries than
in nrirM Yet there was still no
aigniflcant pickup in forward
purchasing.
"With the aulckeninK of retail
turnover, reorders on ready-to-
wear lines took the spouigni.
Calls from stores in the heavy
inriimtrv areas were said to be

parel were reported in larger
volume than usual at this sea
son. "Large backlogs In heavy In

JAP WITHDRAWAL
Shanghai, Aug. 23. (P) Re
port! of renewed Chinese mili
tary activity in North China co
incided today with unconfirm
able but detailed Chinese ac
count! of extensive withdrawal
of Japanese troops from North
China during the past month.
These reports, which placed
the number of Japanese troops
Involved at 100.000 said they
were removed from Hopeh, Ho
nan and Shansl provinces
through the port of Tangku,
where they were said to have
boarded south bound transports.
Some of these troops were said
to have been replaced by Man
choukuo soldiers under Japan
ese officers.
The same sources reported
wives and children of Japanese
railway workers were being re
moved from North China areas,
presumably due to the shorten
Ing and thinning of Japanese
defense lines caused by the
troop movements.
In the renewed Chinese mili
tary activity, guerrillas were re
ported to have attacked North
China's main railways. A Jap
anese army spokesman in Pel
ping said they were repulsed.
